I think display boards are super cool additions that I would totally like to see but have absolutely no desire to build.
I would definitely be unhappy to realize that the event I was likely struggling to build and paint an army for was also requiring a completely new hobby project using skills I've never cared to aquire.

The only tourney we have that gives extra painting points for display boards is club champs... but it's definitely not a requirement at all!

The travel aspect is also a very salient point - its hard enough to protect high quality paint jobs when traveling across continents to attend major tournaments, a display board is a whole other thing. Not as relevant for small, local events.

Fortunately for me I don't believe I'll ever be in the position where I'll think "damn, missed that win by a display board point" haha.

Adepticon has always selectively chosen to forget that they have out grown being a local/regional event (not just for 40k, they have consistently had similar issues with flames of war, firestorm armada, and other game systems going back as long as I can remember)
They view themselves as the sort of event that you spend preparing for from the moment it ends until the next one occurs.
They want to get the same visuals you see at warhammer world, but in a tournament where 75% of attendees can't just drive in from a few hours away
With that said, the thing that is contentious is that Adepticon's event awards ITC points while deviating from ITC in scoring AND gets the winner a spot at GWs championship. If it was doing neither of those, and billing itself as an independent 40k major...this would be a non issue, as it would just be its own quirky event.
