Hey all....given that the book is being read a lot more down at the store, I thought I would ask what people are thinking about the common game size being upped to 3,000 pts? I've been hearing a lot of talk about 30-40 minutes being cut off of the average 2k game, and that your standard "tournament" size is going to be headed towards 3k.
Any thoughts on this? Are people around here prepared to go higher or do you want to stick at a lower points level?

We're looking at staying with 2250 for the first tourney in 8th, which should give a good idea if we would need to up the point level.... if we're finding everyone's done alot sooner (as in tourney is over an hour and a half shorter!) then we may need to look at upping the point values to 3k....
the main issue I see with going up to 3k is alot of newer players may not have that many models to construct a list that large... (I know GW, just buy more right?)....

Are you guys completing 6 turns on Thursdays? Maybe it is because i'm new, but i've only seen 3 turns finish, and most of the time it ends in 2. As I play Bretonnians, we're better in the late game as most of my heavy attacks come from charge/melee and not so much from ranged or magic. So it takes a couple of rounds to get things going. Maybe i'm just playing too slowly (new to the rules), but i think a time reduction in a total game at 2250 would allow the games to complete 6 turns, and even out the score for the late bloomer armies. (Not that i'm doing too badly)

I'm only speaking for myself, but I'm normally finishing 6 turns (sometimes only 5) in the time on Thursdays.... but I'm used to playing fairly quickly (my army is not that complex either!) as I try to keep to "tournament speed" if I can... this is mainly due to having time constraints for the campaign where we want to be starting game two between 7:30 - 7:45 pm if possible (as some people have to leave early)
I would agree though, when you're newer to the system, a short time frame is certainly difficult to manage.....
Matt had stated that he heard 8th plays quicker.... I'm really not sure how they're shaving off that much more time, but I've yet to see an 8th ed game, so I'm sure they've got something in place to speed up the game. (as that is what others have experienced)
I know for our first 8th ed tourney on the 10th we're sticking with 2250... and from what Frank's heard, warmasters is also sticking with this....

The Thursday games are cut a bit short in order to cram in 2. Our usual game time is 2 hours for a 2250 point Tourney game, and we rarely have trouble getting them in!

I agree with justice7ca. Newer players or those that haven't played much will be a bit slower for awhile (we often have to check the rule book on something we are unsure of or asking someone like Shannon or Matt). If the new rules supposedly speed up play in a few areas (e.g. no guess range weapons for war machines) learning the changes in 8th will still take a bit for many players.
Therefore I wouldn't up the army size until were sure that games do actually take less time and that most people have become familiar with 8th.

Yeah...tiers are going to take a bit of figuring out. If you look at the internet High Elves seem to range from first to worst depending on who you talk to.....same with Orcs actually.
