I'm struggling a bit in parsing Look Out, Sir!, and need a hand.
It SEEMS like two statements, but it's a but fuzzy to me how / if they overlap, because I'm finding conflicting answers elsewhere.
I get Wounds < 9 characters near vehicles / units, etc. If the character is near 'protection', you can't pick him out.
But the second part says: "In all cases, if that character unit is both visible to the firing model, and it is the closest unit to the firing model, it can be targeted normally".
I read that as an EXCEPTION to the first - if Commander Dave is standing closer than the Vehicle, you can still hit Commander Dave.
But I've seen it suggested that, if Commander Dave is in the open, but Trooper Steve - about 12" from Commander Dave - is closer to me, I can't shoot Commander Dave; the rule's intent is to establish that the ONLY time I can shoot W<9 characters is if they're unprotected, AND closest.
Can someone help a daft fool understand?

I can help.
When attempting to shoot at a Character, check if they benefit from Look Out Sir.
If they don't: you can shoot them.
If they do: you can shoot them only if they are the closest eligible target (a la previous iterations of the rule - if the guy is way out in front of his entourage, you can still pick him out.
How does a Character benefit from Look Out Sir? They have to be within 3" of a unit consisting of 3+ models, a Monster or Vehicle.

Okay, good.
So Commissar Dave standing alone at 30" can be shot, even if Guardsman Steve is at 18".
If there's a Baneblade at 31", and Commissar Dave is at 30", and Guardsman Steve is at 18", I can't shoot The Commissar just yet, as he's not closest.
If there's a Baneblade at 31", and Commissar Dave is at 30" (and Guardsman Steve is on leave), I can shoot Dave, even though he's protected, because he's closest (stand behind the tank, Dave).
Baneblade is at 30", Dave's running within 3" of it's back bumper, and 31" from me? I'm stuck shooting the tank.
Correct?
