So I'm planning on doing some point calculations for a 10th ed list but wanted to ask about alternate kit and how they relate to the points document from today ... In 9th ed things like Tyranid Warriors, Hive Guard/ Tyrant Guard etc would really nickel and dime you for changing their wargear. In the points document I don't really see anything about say, equipping deathspitters or crushing claws instead of the default gear, which used to increase the points weight of the unit. Is this not a thing anymore or am I missing some details?

For increasing the number of models in my unit, if the points document has, say, points values for squads of 3 warriors or 6 warriors, are those the only squad sizes or can I do say, 4 or 5?

technically you can do 4 or 5 but you still need to pay for 6. tho tournaments may not allow under powered units

you need to pay for either 3 or 6. tho the designer notes say you can have underpowered units (paying for more but not having them)

Looks like most of the units with options are priced according to the most expensive loadout so more like you're being given the choice to hobble yourself if it's your preference haha. Load up on gear, no point in doing otherwise.

Exactly, they just took the option away to run a less than fully loaded unit.
GW, "we hear you didn't like power level, so here is power level x10 and we call it "points, you're welcome!"

As a very Filthy Casual, they did bring moooost weapon profiles to a "a vs b" level, where there's maybe a "best" but there seems to be at least one or two, "...although...", on each options list.

I think wargear wise, for chaos at least there is no real best way to equip let's say Legionaries. the special/heavy weapon choices all have there intended targets, (lascannons vs multimelta vs heavy bolters vs autocannons etc). same with the predator tank sponsors, I can take 2 heavy bolters or 2 lascannons. I tend to pick the bolters just for the 6 shots vs 2 shots. but yeah load them up for now. hoping that when codex releases that the wargear stays free

I was talking with Jordan the other day, and we floated the idea of all wargear being "free" currently to let GW see what is the "always/sometimes/never" wargear options. With points being updated quarterly, they can really flex the points per gun/piece of wargear to curb the spam/abuse from said wargear in a hurry without having to change profiles.
In my opinion, I feel like the initial "it's all free!!!" won't last long, and is being used to playtest what should remain free, and what should have points added to it as the "optimized" loadouts become apparent as the new 10th ed meta takes shape.
