Everyone seems to like 40K for a slightly different reason... so what are they?

As I'm sure I've said many times, I enjoy collecting the models and getting together with friends to play games. It's one of the few opportunities I get to actually hang out with friends and do something fun. Online gaming was my major social outlet for years (gotta love TeamSpeak , but work schedules kind of killed that one (can't pull the all-nighters anymore or play for hours on end every night). Warhammer gives me a chance to play when I can since gaming nights are fixed and Matt having a table in his basement means if some free time opens up and he's free as well, I can just walk over and get a game in If you'd asked me a few years ago, I would have probably said the competative side, but I've since grown out of the need to compete and now just play the game for the joy of it. I'm now at the point where I like playing the crazy lists or more fluffy lists that really don't stand a chance at the competative level, but can make for a fun game. Plus I enjoy helping other people figure out what they want from their armies and trying the help them have fun with it.

I like collecting the models, the social aspects of the game and casual wargaming (not concerned with power lists) however I do play to win and so want a reasonably competitive and fun army (I guess that may be asking too much with some armies but what the heck).

I enjoy collecting (as my basement proves!), painting and casual wargaming... I really like tournaments, but mainly so I can get a bunch of games in more than anything else....

I'm also curious whether the more hobbyist aspects of 40K also extends to terrain building for many people. Who has their own gaming tables, for instance? I know my goal is to have my own gaming table but I just haven't started the process yet.

I have a table, but more to facilitate my gaming than from actually enjoying terrain making. I know how, but it's not a huge part of it for me. Most of my terrain has actually been put together by other people who very much do enjoy it.
As for me, I've bumped through basically every stage of that over the last 10+ years...except maybe painting, that's always seemed a chore to me.
The core for me has always been conversions, gaming for fun and endless tactical discussions. I got very competitive at one point, and proved myself fairly well on the tourney circuit, but having to max my list all the time got old for me, and I find these days I have much more fun taking an unbalanced or weak list and seeing what I can make of it, and trying to come up with innovative ways to make odd things work.
Another key one for me that isn't up there is the fluff. I quite enjoy putting backstories and the like to all my characters (I'm coming close to having a story for every Word Bearer in my list...shudder), and just reading up on the universe in general.
I think my time with the Grey Knights really mellowed me out. It let me see the best and worst of tournament play, and the best and worst of casual play, but it really solidified it in my mind that the game is in fact a GAME at it's core, and shouldn't be anything to fret about. I enjoy it by far the most to have a tactical yet friendly game, and then discuss the living hell out of what happened during it after the fact.

That seems a good way to approach the game for anyone, actually... a great hobby, worth putting in the time and trying to win when you do play, but not worth fretting about if things don't work out. As long as I never lose to stinking Eldar, I can respect that. ;D

Yeah losing to Eldar sucks. I hope no one here ever has to....wait a minute....*looks at army on shelf...runs to hide behind Word Bearers*
