Having entered the Leviathan tournament, I now have three weeks to paint up a 2000 point army. The tournament may not have a painting requirement, but I do - so time to get moving. I'm logging my progress here for advice and posterity.
In my favour and by design, the entire army is 33 models. Less by design is the fact I can't take Space Marines seriously, so this is going to be a test of whatever speed painting tools I can cobble together. Armour of Contempt, from contempt.
In the army's current state, I have five assembled dreadnoughts. Going to try using spray primer/base for the first time.

Here is CHONK FORCE FIVE ready for priming. Readied up with N95 mask and gloves. Pinned down the models with sticky tack. Set up my outdoor spray booth (a cardboard box). Removed the Redemptor weapons, as they're push-fit swappable.
In the end I was laying them down on their sides or picking up the models to get the final angles. I didn't really need to pin them in place. I probably will for lighter models.
This was much faster than my normal brush-on priming. Ideally, this will be the first and last coat of black on these models.

Getting depth on black armor or other black models is a challenge. You'll end up doing edge highlighting in really dark greys, then a lighter grey sparingly at the very tips and corners to mimic "shine/flare". Good part is, if you overdo it, you can always give it a really thinned down black wash to soften your transitions.

Priming is complete and the models are ready for further painting.
I can see in spots that the oil from my fingers in handling the units still came through after painting the units. Not correcting that was half haste and half not wanting to leave cleaner residue on the models before spraying. Next time I'll do a wipe down with IPA and a microfiber cloth. Either touchups or decals will cover those spots up.
Next up is painting features - gears, guns, and gubbins. After that will be edge highlighting. Then small details - luckily there are no eyes to paint.
A leg came off one of these precious chonky boys in post-drying handling - an overabundance of plastic glue should hopefully hold that in place. Also, as expected, the guns no longer cleanly push-fit into place. Some shaving of the connection points should help that.

WIP on Dreadnoughts. WIP on Dreadnoughts. Progress slowed by the new Zelda game. No real struggles here on details, save creativity. There's no deep vision on this build. Just picking out the details that look important to me and half-assing the job overall. Next is edge highlighting. I thought I'd try something I'd read about - a panel liner pen to deal with many of the armour details and edge highlights. The one I bought is too dark and it's not fit for edge highlighting. I imagined it to be more of a marker and less of a thin paint dispenser. More details will stand out in edge highlighting - I just was hoping I wouldn't have to do it by brush. Dann, this shit is difficult. The all-day Babylon 5 marathon and paintathon continues.
Edit: The highlighting is done. My cat has found a home in my now free lap. Decals tomorrow. This puts me a day behind where I want to be, but there's still plenty of time.

The dreadnoughts are done. Or at least done enough. The half-ass job on these turned out to be a three-quarters-ass job with practicing edge highlighting and cleaning up the mistakes. I also took some extra time to really fancify the cog mechanicus on the back of each model. The Redemptor guns still need to be painted, but that will probably be my last task. Next will be assembling and priming/basing the infantry. I'll start the painting with the heavy intercessors, since those look like they have the fewest details.

Life slowed down infantry assembly. I still need to attach the greeblies to these models - things like holsters and gizmos. I was hoping to get ahead of the rain in the weather forecast with my rattle can spray, but it was not to be.
EDIT: Painting was done before rain - the humidity today doesn't look like it harmed the spray paint job. I ran a test beforehand and things looked OK. I can start on the infantry on Sunday.
EDIT THE SECOND: I noticed some angles I missed with paint on the first pass. Emboldened by my previous spray success, I've touched up those models with the spray again. This is getting into dangerous levels of giving a shit about this army's paint job, and I need to get back on track.

First five infantry complete. DECALS DO NOT LIKE CURVED SURFACES. All infantry models are edge highlighted and ready for painting.
The last shortcut I'm using here are custom bases. I did not expect that the bases would not be hollow underneath, so I will have to wait for after the tournament to magnetizing these models.

I should have clarified my comment haha. Microsol and Microset are a pair of products specifically for affixing decals and softening them safely to the point of following irregular and curved surfaces. Microset hereI'm actually going to put up a separate post soon detailing my process if folks are interested. I love decals

Nexus didn't have any Microset and there's not really time to order it. The Microsol looks to be diluted vinegar, so I've tried using that at home. It's useful information that I took to heart, but can't put in place right now. I'm just going to brush some extra matte varnish on the decals and hope for the best. I appreciate the recommendation!
