By stands do you mean the bases that your model stands on? If so here is a quick and easy method for doing many at once, since you're playing skaven...
1 - paint your model first... leave basing to the last step 2 - paint the entire base a brown color you like 3 - once the base dries completely, take white glue and put it on the base 4 - dip the base in fine sand or other sandy type mix (Nexus sells sand / rubble etc.) 5 - once this dries completely, add a few drops of white glue on the base and use this glue to stick flock (fake grass - can also buy at Nexus) at intervals on the base - don't cover it completely you want some sand to show through - make it random, so that all the bases don't look identical
and you're done... very quick and easy... I recommend doing large units at a time and batch basing them (I've at times based 50 models in one go...)
It also helps having a small container of your sand mix ready to go. you can use actual sand, or for a more grainy feel, leading edge hobbies sells different grades and colors of this in their model train section...

For me, personally, I use the sand & gravel, but I base my models first, then prime them and hand paint the bases. And I wonder why it takes me forever to paint anything

i paint the model first i glue sand on then paint it black (after it dries) then dry brush with 3 colors of brown, from dark to light then add a little white glue and glue on a mix of green and brown flock if a little brown paint gets onto the boots/feet of the model it just ends up looking like mud then spray a little clear coat on the base
