I guess that question depends on what you want it to be used for. If it's terrain, then stone or a bronze/patina style statue would be fitting. If it's a "collector's" piece, then as accurate as possible just in large-scale would be my goal.
If it's terrain, then you could also do it "as he'd be colored" then have stone chipping through the laquer coating it, as if it had been a really fantastically sculpted and finished stone statue that's worn down by the ages.
