Looking at the new tyranid codex I wondered if most new codexes have an increase in new units comparable to the amount in the nid dex.
The old nid dex had about 15 units but the new nid dex has about lists 34 on the summary page. Of course some units like winged warriors were listed under the single warrior entry in the old dex and now have a separate entry under fast attack. The new dex has added swarmlord, harpy, tervigon, trygon, tyranid prime, mawloc, T-fex, pyrovore, hive guard, doom, parasite, venomthrope, deathleaper, Ymgral stealers, mycetic spore and Old One Eye.
This basically doubled the units in the dex. It is nice to have some new units but it seems to me that GW went overboard. However with limited knowledge of the other dexes out there, I wanted to know whether the other 5th edition dexes have had such a large pile of units added?

No not really. Every codex puts 1 or 2 new things into a book, generally, though nothing so much as Tyranids did. That book is a complete mess in my opinion....

It's going to be interesting to see how they update something like the Tau codex which greatly lacks in special characters and could also easily accommodate an increase in specialized units or allies.

I'm wondering if Tau will see some more of the Forgeworld stuff transferred over to the codex the way they did with the Pirhanna? And likely a new alien auxiliary as well.

Regarding FW units, I'm really hoping the new codex will include the Tetra. I could see that becoming a very useful unit, particularly if I could throw a seeker missile on it. ( sorry, I don't know its existing rules )
Speaking more generally, I wonder if we'll start to see genuine flyers in standard 40K?

Short answer, no. They just boggle the rules of the game too much. I've asked this question to the higher ups a few times, and they've always said that flyers will be an optional rule. That said, most of the guys I knew aren't with the company anymore, and who knows what might come out. It would definitely not be until we see a 6th edition though.

I do hope that all codices are updated to 5th before we see a 6th edition.

Hard to say with GW. There's still several running 3rd ed codexes.....

Actually, has anyone else heard whisperings of CSM being updated? Incredulously, I thought I had read something along those lines in the not so terribly distant future...

What I've heard is Grey Knights, Dark Eldar, then Necrons.

Be nice to actually have the option for more than just 2 workable builds. I'm actually looking forward to possibly having to relearn the army. Though not looking forward to having to buy the army all over again :S or it end up being that everyone ends up playing them.

My greatest fear is the Dark Eldar assault from the back table edge...
