In 3rd I had to, but 4th, I thought, took that rule out. But again, if asked I always had to tell people anyways.

I've always told my opponent what my models have and if I had vehicles what was inside as standard practice. Secrecy is something that should be discussed beforehand, especially before one side explains their stuff and then the other says lets use secrecy.
Magic in fantasy is another area that can be awkward. If it is a matter of paying for a particular spell for a spellcaster that is one thing. There are armies that have to roll for their spells - how do you keep this secret and fair?

well for magic you roll infront of them and tell them but i always assumd magic items you didnt have to tell them cause their are items that if they hit the unit the opponent has to tell them what items are in that unit. now im new to both so maybe players always tell people if they do then im sorry i have been trying to spring taps on people, lol which haven't been working since i have won one out of 6 matched in the fantasy campaign lol
