I have just been looking at my core codex. But saw in other threads and stuff people talking about forge world and stuff. Should i be looking at those as additions to my army? do you guys even allow that stuff? If so too both what should i look at? Apocalypse? Imperial Armour? or what?

Forgeworld stuff is very pretty and in some cases they make models for stuff GW doesn't. But the Forgeworld rules for things are fine in a friendly game if you let your opponent know ahead of time, but rarely are they allowed in tournament play since most of the stuff from Forgeworld isn't balanced (usually more points than it's really worth or as Matt found out, completely tip the balance in a standard game since the rules are written for Apocalypse level games)

On a related note, what about the old VDR guidelines?
...because I've designed a supercool 200ish point command Devilfish that is almost completely useless but I'd love to field!

The XV-9 stats are definitely listed online... in fact, if I remember correctly, they might even be featured on the FW website.
I don't remember the names of the other weapons but to my mind, none of them replaced the good ol' FireKnife.

The VDR rules, unfortunately, were written during 3rd Ed so became unusable in 4th. I've always wondered if they'd ever release updated rules, but so far GW has stayed far away from the VDRs since they didn't get the response they'd hoped for

Yeah. I wouldn't mind playing with really...anything...VDR or not, so long as the game was for fun and everyone was clear on what was coming. It's when that stuff starts popping out as a "surprise" that it starts being problematic. Most people, no matter how diplomatic, tend to get annoyed if you pull out the "I WIN!" card, without them even knowing it was in the deck.

On a related note, in tournaments, I assume that both players always have access to each other's army list? Also, I've seen some players put models on top of their transports to signify what's inside... but some players don't. What's the etiquette on that sort of thing?

You aren't required to put a model on a transport (for some it is very hard to do especially when trying to move them) but I do believe that if your opponent asks you must disclose what's inside.

Yeah....you are supposed to disclose to your foe what is inside transports...it's usually easily with things like Rhinos, but with the more alien transports there tend not to be a good space for them. It's actually one of my pet peeves about the game, I much preferred previous editions where you could actually hide it. I mean, a Guard armoured army would really have no way of knowing which Wave Serpent had dangerous Fire Dragons and which had Dire Avengers, or which squad in a rhino had melta guns or flamers.
All our tourneys are intended to be open lists. They aren't necessarily always handed over at the start of the game, but yes, you are able to ask for clarification at any point during the game.

....I'm lucky... can always fit my orks in the vehicles for easy display - and then in the resulting crater soon afterwards!

Yeah, that's what I thought. Actually, when I first started getting into the game, that was one of the things that seemed weird to me... although I certainly understand and support the idea behind showing and explaining things to your opponent. Still, takes away some of the mystery.

For my Dark Eldar, the rule change to full discloser hurt a lot since now I have to actually block in my important units on raiders (wyches and HQ) or else they are always the first ones targetted.
Mind you with the models I have, the raiders for elite/HQ are painted differently from those of the regular troops so I couldn't really hide them in the first place.

Even in the older editions you were supposed to let the opponent know because they're open topped, and it's assumed that what's on them is visible, if I remember correctly. That said, as you said I always shot at the ones with nicer paint jobs anyway!

Hiding info is interesting for the unknown aspect, but if it was used I don't see that it would just cover closed topped vehicles. The argument would be that I cannot see into the 2 rhinos so I don't know which one has unit 'x'. Well would other units also be able to hide info? For example, if you look at a new codex Hive Tyrant the opponent should be told what weapons are mounted (if not obvious or counts as is being used etc) but the enemy would not know what other powers such as paroxsym or old adversary the model had until it was used.
