This was never a problem with my skeletal Necron vehicles but since I'm getting the models needed to run a 2000 pt Votann list again I figured I should double check.
40k uses 'true line of sight' targeting where if a model can see a model from the opposing unit, they can target them. But what happens when an intervening vehicle is large enough that you can't draw a LoS between your models and a target behind it without impacting said vehicle?
Because I'm looking at the plastic bricks that are my land fortresses, and wondering if they would be able to prevent my opponents from firing at units depending on placement etc.
I know that I wouldn't get cover if an enemy unit managed to get an angle around the fortress etc; I'm just wondering if the vehicle could prevent my opponent from legally targeting units properly hidden behind it.

Do your vehicles have wheels? LOS could be drawn beneath the hulls.

The Land Fortress isn't completely flush against the ground because of its wheels - if my ankles can see your ankles, I'm eligible to shoot at you.

it would be pretty difficult to completely and utterly block something with your vehicle. I'm not saying it's impossible, but if any minor part of them is even a couple mm shown they can be shot.
But the Land Fortress will definitely provide cover!

But the Land Fortress will definitely provide cover! With the exception of the Baneblade, which has it as its datasheet special rule, units don't provide cover to other units. Line of sight has to be obscured by a terrain feature for a unit to claim cover.

Do your vehicles have wheels? LOS could be drawn beneath the hulls. Yeah there is like, 0.5 centimeters of clearance under the vehicle.
So at the end of the day, assume that no vehicles can block line of sight unless they have a special rule saying so.

I think the good old junk box Rhino is pretty close to blocking since it's solid from ground to top. Only issue is the models being blocked have to be on the short end.

I know that I wouldn't get cover if an enemy unit managed to get an angle around the fortress etc; I'm just wondering if the vehicle could prevent my opponent from legally targeting units properly hidden behind it. According to the "Determining Visibility" section of the core rules, only a model's own unit are ignored for the purposes of determining visibility of an enemy model/unit. If there's a single toe/wing/gun-barrel/part-of-your-base visible, you are visible, and hence a legal target. The benefit of cover can only be provided by Terrain features, not other models, except in specific cases like the Baneblade mentioned above. The risk of hiding behind a vehicle that breaks LOS, is that if your opponent blows up said vehicle... well... you can figure out the rest from there. But it does work if you have suitably brick-like things.

Well there you go, I was being far too kind to my vehicle toting opponents giving them cover! Nice to know that's not a thing in tenth!
(Doesn't really come up for nids lol)
