Well here's an interesting article on Kirby's 3++ blog that looks at the results of the placings for ard boys prelims, and what armies came out on top... and which ones were left in the dust.... ..... and the article attempts to look at why these results are what they are... I disagree with some of the assumptions (as they are assumptions which aren't exactly a statistically valid thing to introduce into statistical analysis!!!) but interesting read... kirbysblog-ic.blogspot.com/2011/08/ard-boyz-prelim-results-some-statistics.html

Certainly an interesting article. As you said, I don't necessarily agree with everything being said....Judging the balance of 40k off of 'Ard Boyz strikes me as a bit wrong....."hey look...all the newer books can cheese out pretty equally...."
That said, I think 'Ard Boyz is becoming the face of 40k anymore, and a lot of the books are being written at least partially with 'Ard Boyz in mind. Pity, that.

I have yet to try out the Dark Eldar cheese, but I have to agree with Matt. Space Marines, by far, benefit a lot the more points they can field.
And other than Nids (sorry Shannon) all the new books do seem to have the "cheese" factor built into them.
At some point (ie when I actually have the models) I'll likely try out the Dark Eldar cheese to see if it works, but would likely only be pulling it out for tournaments since I've found any of my old-style lists just don't hold up in this edition.

What we can take from this IMO, is that at least Nids placed more then the old 4th ed codii? ;D

The thing about nids is... they do absolutely fine until they run up against one of their "hard counters" which are a properly built mech army, well built dark eldar, and any of the new marines (once again built properly)... once you hit these, you are in huge trouble... it is still possible to win, however you can only go so far before you hit something that just removes your army from the table (ie: in my case, I won both my first two games, then hit Tom's well built, well played purifier spam army and simply evaporated for the most part)
nids can win... against many armies... (you still have to play with good tactics)... and if you don't hit your hard counters...
when you look at the top armies, they're all 5th ed codex... so built for the edition... only exception is nids...
