Thinking about dusting off my tau and trying to get back into 40k. I played a decent amount in 8th, but quit about 4 games into 9th.
Downloaded the 40k app and was disappointed to see it's far more aggressively paywall locked than the AoS equivalent. Datasheets aren't super important at the moment since the new book is coming. But I was trying to get a feel for how army building works.
What are people using to build lists? Is battlescribe still the most popular method?
I'll study the core rules, but figuring out how to build lists around secondaries was what really put me off in 9th. Any resources or tips on how to factor that into list building? Are faction secondaries still a thing?

Faction secondaries aren’t a thing.
Some people are still using battlescribe. Newrecruit is a web based builder that is also popular.
Cheap units that are mobile or can deepstrike that have assault weapons are generally the best things for scoring secondaries since you can move/advance/deepstrike them in, have them so their thing and then get killed the next turn.

The game changed in 10th to use a deck for secondaries, and these are the only ones you can use so no more faction ones. You can choose to draw randomly (what most people do) or there's a select few that you can instead use to just play two all game (but it gives you 1 less point than achieving the same secondary through random draw)
Battlescribe is still a thing that people use. The free version of the GW app lets you build one list, and really if you want to look up the units Wahapedia exists (if you just want to use the GW app to make the list itself)
Generally the game encourages brining some units that are there to just score points. this edition is way more based upon objective/secondary play than ever before. There's only a few secondaries for example that require you to even kill anything!

Awesome, thanks for the replies. That all sounds a lot better than what I was expecting to hear regarding the secondary game.
I always really liked maelstrom. Would rather build a rounded list and react to the changing objectives than have a set plan to carry out a particular series of of moves. More movement and board presence objectives sounds great to me.
I'll try newrecruit, and update my battlescribe. Flipping between wahapedia and gw's app sounds like unnecessary extra steps ha. Last I checked, I can't sign up for warhammer plus anyway, so paying for the app isn't even a consideration.
Tune in later for when I try to drag someone out for a learning game.

if you liked maelstrom you'll love the new card deck... it's an improvement on that system that frankly works really well and really encourages an all comers style of list (you can't just deathball yourself across the table like in 8th/9th because you won't actually score any points!)
you can sign up for Warhammer plus... I'm signed up currently, have been the whole time (go on the site and change what country you're logged in from - lets you sign up just fine)

I was able to sign up for Warhammer+ just on the app through Google Play. I don't know if that was supposed to be able to happen or not but c'est la vie. You could always try that?

Hmm ok. I knew old active subs weren't being canceled when quebec ruined things for everyone, but I was under the impression that new canadian subscriptions weren't being processed.
I can't sign up via the website. Even if I change my location to elsewhere in the store, I get a blocked page when I try to sign up to warhammer+
I didn't try to sub directly through the App though. Do you still have access to the video content? Not sure I'll do it at all just yet, but definitely not paying $100/yr just for the army builder.

Yeah, I have access to the Warhammer+ videos. I mostly did it for the army builder + free model. I actually really like the official army builder - it's a shame because I'd rather not pay for it.

I also haclve the warhammer+ . I too mostly got it for the list building and the mini lol. the TV stuff is a bonus the way I look at it. I used to use battle scribe but I haven't been able to use it really since 10th came out.

I've been using New Recruit. Free, web based, and synchronizes lists across all devices.
