You have to take it if you take a caster, so let's see what's new and different about ogre magic.
1. You don't get your own special miscast table anymore. That's a good thing, as the 1D6 table of death was a little nasty by anyone's standards.
2. You don't hurt yourself every time you cast. This is huge... you still have a chance due to the lore attribute but it's only on a 1, so that's far better than what happened before.
3. Everything has rising casting costs, just like everyone else. It was kind of nice to be the only book to spam spells on a 3+. sure they were all remains in play that were easily dispelled on your opponent's turn... but for that one turn you could seriously boost your ogres into a terrifying force. So no more spell spam for you. But at least your lore attribute is bloodgruel so it's like getting the old spell for free every time you cast... quite nice... that being said, getting trollguts off now is going to be much more difficult with the higher casting cost.
4. None of the spells are remains in play. This is huge. you get them for a full turn, which means those defensive buffs still work in your opponent's phase. You won't have as many of them, but the ones you get are more reliable.
5. The spells themselves are the same, with the exception that +1 S and stubborn are split into two separate spells. None of the effects are that big... the big uber spell is pretty devastating, but no more so than the other lores. In the end it's a decent buffing lore with a few minor offensives that you'll probably drop for the signature spell if you have a choice.
6. Butchers and Slaughtermasters are no longer loremasters. This is a huge change for ogre magic, and part of the reason a buffing lore could be so powerful in the last book when things went your way. This is going to be very limiting for ogre magic, and will probably be the reason why a butcher takes great maw, and a slaughtermaster takes something else... the spells are pretty mediocre overall and without being able to cast alot of them, or even have access to the whole list anymore... there's just alot of better choices out there...
