Barrels?

I have a question for the community.  

Tau weapons.   Plasma and Fusion both have a knob at the end of the weapon.  I never know if it should be a barrel or some futuristic weapon port.

Have people been drilling holes in them?

I'd personally say yes to both, I mean... they're barrels; things have to come out of them, and teleportation just seems far too extra. Plus, it's your own army, drill, don't drill; all up to you!
