I'm going to try and build a convincing land raider (because I'm cheap and its over priced) so I'm looking to see if anyone has opinions on wether I can just build a box or do I have to make it look good to be an official model, not something I'm trying out but a full replacement for the real thing.

proxies are fine with me, in fun games it could be a box about the size of a landraider, like i have used a purple pencil box as a landraider before cause i wanted to test it out and the person was totally fine with that cause it was a little bigger then what a landraider would be, although not much. i also use confrontation models and lord of the rings models as some of my 40k models the lord of the rings ones are the same size and the confrontation ones are a little bigger so no one has had a problem and for 90% of the games we play im sure no one will have a problem with it like i have seen a toy car with a toilet paper tube as an ork truck, but in some tournaments you would need wysiwyg(what you see is what you get) and in offical tournaments you would need the actual model
also if im playing and you need a landraider tell me before hand and i have one i can bring i like hardly ever use

Using proxies is fine with many people because often people want to try things out before buying models because they are so expensive. So the pencil box or whatever similar-sized object being a landraider in friendly games is usually fine at first with most people. If you plan to use the unit regularly than a better representation is needed. If you are going to make models try to keep them the same approx size as the original.
This is important for game purposes such as LOS - both shooting at and being shot at; which weapons can fire at a target (for example usually you cannot shoot both lascannon sponsons at the same target because of the size of the vehicle and the position of the lascannons). If you make it too small or too big your opponent may feel that you have modeled for advantage whether intentional or not. Also as was said earlier many tournaments may not accept home made stuff when actual models exist so you need to check with the tournament organizer beforehand. The more it appears to be what it is supposed to represent the better your chances will be IMO.
