Particularly in tournaments, as far as structures go, everything tends to be in ruins. The rules for buildings aren't particularly complex, and certainly not any worse than anything else in the game. Anyway, I've always been puzzled by this. For the amount of variety they might add to even a few tournament tables, why aren't they used more frequently?

Mainly due to the lack of "building" terrain available at Nexus. Everything tends to be ruins, or overly large for what is regularly used for tournament terrain.

Ruins seem more popular to me as the 40k universe is one of war and destruction ruins fit that environemnt better vs intact buildings. Plus terrain ruins seem that they would in many cases be easier to use. For example a two story ruin that you can put models on is easy to get your hand into to move your models around in - this may or may not be the case with an intact building.
Mike has some nice gothic type ruins and intact building models for sale that are open (no roof) that will allow the easy placement of models.

I actually asked this question on Warseer not long ago. Seems they're hardly used ANYWHERE and never find their way on to the tables in major tourneys. Odd, that. I can try sticking some buildings on tables in tourneys, and just leaving it up to players what to count them as.

Instead of money, it might be cool sometime to have the entrance fee as a small painted or modelled building or some sort or another...

I think that adding buildings from time to time will add a great deal of depth to our play. Giving the option to destroy buildings to gain line of sight etc...
Jon and I discussed this yesterday while we were playing down at Nexus. If it wasn't for the fact that OUR building took up one third of the play area it would have made for an interesting test of Tau firepower. D'Narb would have had to destroy at least four individual "areas" of the structure to see my hiding Eldar.
I am interested in seeing what kind of effect buildings could have on not only the tactical aspect of a match but also the Epic feel of it as well. A squadron of Broadsides leveling the city around you would add an extreme feel for the awesome weaponry fielded by our 40K troops. The Vindicator could become a veritable battlefield juggernought.
I think it sounds cool.

And, as a building medium to make them really durable you could use laminate flooring, Rona has a discount section where you can get a lot of square footage for 10 bucks a box. It's easily cut and the backsides are porous and accept paint easily.
