I know that customization is obviously a huge part of this hobby but in the larger tournaments, is it ever frowned upon to use things that GW has nothing to do with?
For example, I've seen Human auxiliaries of the Tau Empire converted using body parts from other modelling companies. Would something like this ever actually be disallowed in a tournament?

our local tournies normally allow non GW...
..."official" GW tournies (or if you want to travel anywhere to play in other big tournaments) won't allow it...
...locally you should be fine....

As far as I can recall there are no stats/pt costs on human auxiliaries for Tau in their codex although I hope that this is expanded upon whenever the codex is redone.

True, I'm not sure but I think it might have been some Chapter Approved thing in the past? I really don't know the details. I agree, though: it would be cool to have Humans included and I think that definitely will be the case... and hopefully not just the completely bare-bones unit that used to be supported.

Well, not much can be said about them except that it's hard to beat 36pts for a troops choice!

Those Gue'vesa rules had to be deleted. Do not post ANY GW stat lines or points costs online. I know the forum is still somewhat small and hidden, but Shannon and Tommy as site owners could get in a TON of trouble from GW legal if that stuff stays up here.

Even if they could be fielded, I think they're a fairly terrible choice, aside from their diminutive points cost. Imho, absolutely nothing about them improves upon the standard Fire Warrior choice. However, in a new codex, I could see them becoming a full-fledged troop choice, perhaps 0-1, but taken as a genuine support unit with a host of various weapons options.
