start with the library of knowledge... that's what it's there for....
But if you want a good start for a skaven list, begin with:
50 slaves 50 slaves 30+ clanrats 20+ stormvermin if you like the models 2 warplightning cannons Grey seer with at least a dispel scroll BSB warplock engineer with doomrocket two units of five gutter runners with poison slings
This covers your magic, your scroll, gives you a horde of expendable models, with a bsb to keep your leadership steady... plus two of the cheapest, most effective warmachines in the game, plus two units of warmachine hunters.... this is a good base to begin building a list from...
this also leaves you a lot of points to add in models you like, big ticket items such as bells, furnaces, aboms, doomwheels... or some specialty hammers such as rat ogres... you should figure out a couple of hammer units to add to the above core, in order to support your force... hammer and anvil is the big tactic here... pin a unit in place with a steadfast unit with lots of ranks, then hit in the flank with a hammer unit...
once you get bored with how good and effective that is, you can play around with the silly fun units too... (ie: vermin lords and other such nonesense)
to be competitive stay away from any special characters, and practice anvil/hammer til you're really good at it....

well that type of list will win almost every time. so if you want somthing different you can play a rat oger army. or try themed armies like plague theme

FYI plague themed can be very difficult to win with... and I've been plagued that themed list since the book came out... against a competitive build you'll lose often (one mistake will cost you dearly, because once your furnace(s) are taken care of, there's little that can cause damage... plague monks suck in combat, weird as it is.... S3, WS3 and no saves = sad plague rat
If you aren't winning with the core I've described, then you'd have to look at your tactics as well... if you just don't like that kind of list, then play what you like... no harm at that....

Just add a hellpit abom or two and that will make even the most inexperienced general win!!

I dont like hellpits much. I find they are to much points for what they do all you need is a flaming banner and it's dead.

thats why you bring 2 of them on oppiset sides on the table so only one will die. i have never beat skaven due to the fack they can feld over 300 rats in 2000 point games. just remember steadfast makes then almost never run 60 rats 5wide so 12 ranks and your laughing all the way to the sqeeking bank. also when you feild weapon teams put them in frount of the unit so it prevents the unit from being charged.

The HPA is pretty effective and until the flaming banner arrived it was nearly unkillable. For skaven, it is one of the few heavy hitters in the army and thus can really help out by causing wounds. A good tactic to keep it alive is to use the storm banner versus shooty armies and then run it into a unit of slaves to keep it from getting too far ahead of your main blocks (one of Scott's great sneaky, skaven tricks!!). Then, toss a huge block of infantry into a combat and the HPA as well but the HPA ends up going on the corner so it is only in contact with 1-2 models, making it much tougher to kill.
BTW, if you are looking for more skaven, I just found a battalion box in my closet still in plastic - you can never have too many rats ;D

Thank you all for the help and your quote "You can never have to many rats" I think I have to many I have approximately 240 clan rats but I am still intrested in your battalion.
