So, I made up a couple lists from the new book- one that's more based around grinding people down with big blocks, and the other taking full advantage of all of the new fast moving things in the codex :
List 1 : 2400 big blocks
Lords 590
Vampire Lord Lvl 1 of Vampires Fencer's Blades Glittering Scales Talisman of Endurance Quickblood Red Fury
Master Necromancer Lvl 4 of Vampires
Heroes 375
Vampire Lvl 1 of Shadow Heavy Armor Barded Steed Dragonhelm Dispell Scroll Aura of Dark Majesty Fear Incarnate
Wight King BSB Barded Steed Enchanted Shield Dawnstone
Core 600
50 Skeleton Warriors Mus, SB Screaming Banner Spears
53 Skeleton Warriors Full Command
Special 640
5 Hexwraiths
35 Graveguard Mus, SB Great Weapons Banner of the Barrows
Rare 195
Black Coach
So here we have the fear bomb skelly block, a second skelly block to tarpit things, and the Graveguard to grind them down. Coach and Hexwraiths chase down shooty units and war machines then hit in the flank / rear of units tied up by the blocks. I like the look / feel of it, and I think the general being WS 10 with -1 to hit him will make him rather durable and a 5+ ward to back it up- plus he has 6 attacks hitting on 3's rerolling and creating more attacks for wounds all at Init 7 ASF... seems rather beastly for a Vamp lord setup.
And the speediest speedsters in speedtown list 2400 :
Lords 580
Vampire Lord Lvl 2 of Vampires Fencer's Blades Glittering Scales Quickblood Coven Throne
Heroes 145
Wight King BSB Barded steed Enchanted Shield
Core 600
20 Dire Wolves
20 Dire Wolves
50 Skeletons Full Command
Special 530
9 Black Knights Mus, SB Barding Lances
6 Vargheists
Rare 545
Black Coach
Varghulf
Varghulf
The only thing I can really say about this list is that it is incredibly fast... Am still wondering what else could be done with it- I'm still trying to work on a list revolving around the special slot being nothing but Vargheists and Hexwraiths, but man it's expensive...

Though after looking at it and thinking about it, might drop the Grave Guard for a third Skeleton unit and a mix of either varghulfs and vargheists or some other fast element to add to the army.

I think in list one you need to keep the grave guard to have a heavy hitter available... skeletons are nice tarpit/get a few kills basic units, but they require something else to do the killing...
list two seems very quick... but man I'd hate to paint 40 dire wolves!

Made a new list using the obvious combo of ghouls for core and Mortis engines to support them- after reading the book more and thinking about it, it isn't all that bad of an idea overall. Bonus would also be that I'd only have to buy some of the crypt horrors and the Mortis engines. Lords 535 Ghoul King Lvl 1 of vampires Dispell Scroll Dragonbane gem Red fury Master Necromancer Lvl 4 of vampires Book of Arkhan Heroes 220 Vampire Lvl 1 of Shadow BSB Heavy Armor Barded Steed Screaming Banner Aura of Dark Majesty Fear Incarnate Core 600 20 Skeletons 50 Ghouls Special 605 5 Hexwraiths 6 Crypt Horrors 6 Crypt Horrors Rare 440 Mortis Engine Mortis Engine Uses the combo of the double increase to regen giving the ghouls / skeletons a 5+ regen, and boosts the rest of the regens to 4+. My only real problem with this style of list is that it forces me to pretty much run up the field in one big block rather then being able to spread out appropriately to take advantage of flanks, etc. could be fun though. Very similar to what Dany's been thinking about- I'm likely going to poke around at a list using skeletons primarily with the Mortis engines to support them and make them mini GGstars ultimately. I kept the Ghoul king cheap- wanted to take advantage of his poison and not lose out on it by using a magical weapon, Necro is the standard build you'll likely see now, and the BSB is the fear bomb all in one shiny little package. -1 Leadership, no BSB reroll for fear checks and you take them on 3d6 take the highest... which just sounds like an incredibly fun combo to use and will likely be in all of my lists in some combination. And here's what I'm predicting as one of the power lists if you can get the supporting elements to work properly for it : Lords 565 Vampire Lord Lvl 1 of Vampires Fencer's Blades Glittering Scales Dragonbane Gem Quickblood Red Fury Master Necromancer Lvl 4 of Vampires Heroes 222 Vampire Lvl 1 of Vampires BSB Shield Heavy Armor Barded Steed Screaming Banner Aura of Dark Majesty Fear Incarnate Core 600 50 Skeleton Warriors 280 Full Command Spears 58 Skeleton Warriors 320 Mus, SB Flaming Banner Spears Special 567 5 Hexwraiths 5 Crypt Horrors 6 Crypt Horrors Rare 440 Mortis Engine Mortis Engine The idea is the big blocks of skeletons sitting tight at 5+ / 5+ regen with all of those attacks coming in from the spears (40 per round) taking advantage of all of the rerolling to hits and wounds that the vamp lore brings to the table. You have Crypt horrors (4+ regen buffed) slamming into flanks, the fearbombing BSB in the non flaming banner unit of Skellys and the hexwraiths to run through things to cause some havoc while on their way to mages and/or warmachines. You have the survivable general sittin' at WS 10, -1 to hit him and 5+ regen with dragonbane gem with all of the offensive ability he brings to the table as well... I think this list will be rock solid and hard to move out of the way with all of the Invocation spamming and the regen support the mortis engines bring to the table- But I guess here's to seeing what happens with it all.

I already bought both of them will try it next thursday not this one cuz I have my son but the one after... your both list are really good I think mine is just more concept I know its not like optimum but I dont want to field Vamp with ghoul king just ghoul king with necro and like regen stuff and I gave magic weapon +3 S so I can destroy pretty much anything in close combat

Gonna be coming in to play tomorrow, here's the list I'm likely going to be testing out : Edward Cullen's rock stars 2400 Lords 495 Vampire Lord Lvl 4 of Vampires Fencer's Blades Glittering Scales Talisman of Endurance Quickblood Red Fury Heroes 550 Banshee Banshee Necromancer Lvl 2 of Vampires Book of Arkhan Vampire Lvl 1 of Shadow BSB Heavy Armor Barded Steed Enchanted Shield Dawnstone Aura of Dark Majesty Fear Incarnate Core 605 5 Dire Wolves 5 Dire Wolves 20 Zombies 50 Zombies 50 Skeleton Warriors FC Screaming Banner Special 530 5 Hexwraiths 10 Crypt Horros Rare 220 Mortis Engine Lemme know what you all think. Ultimately I'm wanting to try out the changes to the core selections and the new special / rare selections to see if this kind of a list would be viable or not- also have a list in the works with double Varghulfs and the unit of Crypt Horrors as my hammer with the rest of my army full of capable anvils. Also, Glittering scales- so Edward Cullen... get it? Sigh. The other idea was to drop the Banshees and the Necro, squash the zombie units together into a bigger unit of them and put the Vamp hero on a Coven Throne as that also seems to be a neat addition to the army...

Where are you putting your Vamp lvl1 with the Hex? Also You Vamp is hard to hit but if he is hit hes pretty much done... From what I have seen from my first game you need one big unit for CC for example 80 Skeletons or 80 Zombies like to tarpit big unit or strong unit other then that they will just destroy you in one round.. you will see they will die so quick... Ill be there for second game against Shannon but cant wait to see how you will do maybe Im wrong

Yeah, the vamp doesn't have a whole lot of protection, but he will -never- be in challenges if I have my way... seeing as he's the general I'd rather not see him run into a challenge anyways. He'll likely sit in the skeleton block and help their combat res- the BSB is built for accepting challenges with hits 1+ rerollable armor save. And we shall see Shannon, mwahaha. It might do awful and require more hammer to face action, but I'm hoping I don't have to run the same old units from the old codex all of the time... something different to spice things up would be nice.

All the lists look pretty cool and nicely themed. The only change I might recommend are for the mounted characters. Unless you have a cavalry unit of 5+, they can be sniped by any template weapon on the board. It is important to remember that dire dogs are not cavalry, they are war beasts. Also, while the hexwraiths are cavalry, they would not be able to vanguard or use their special move if your character joins the unit.

Yeah, you have a point- but it sadly loses me 2 armor, so I'm not quite sure where else to make up the armor from in order to get to 1+ now that the new vamps book has zero access to any special armor (aside from the nightshroud, which isn't something I'd take on a hero character). I suppose I could leave him at a 4+ armor 4+ ward setup on foot, but it just seems less survivable in general... hm.

It looks like a lot of the vamp players are coming to the same conclusions on list building atm save I'm the only one not using a ghoul king lol...
This is the new "Tourney style" list I'm looking at- it's the list I tried against Tommy's orcs n goblins last night minus changes to the lord to make him more killy :
Lords 489
Vampire Lord Lvl 4 of Vampires Heavy Armor Shield Ogre Blade Dragonhelm Seed of Rebirth Quickblood Red Fury Beguile
Heroes 546
Banshee
Banshee
Necromancer Lvl 2 of Vampires Dispel Scroll Book of Arkhan
Vampire Lvl 1 of Vampires BSB Shield Heavy Armor Screaming Banner Aura of Dark Majesty Fear Incarnate
Core 625
35 Zombies Musician Banner
50 Ghouls Ghast
Special 300
5 Hexwraiths
5 Hexwraiths
Rare 440
Mortis Engine
Mortis Engine
The new build on my vamp gives him a 4+ regen from the mortis engines, 2++ vs Flaming and a 3+ armor save, so it's not too shabby- I also gave him Beguile as an added defense if he's in base contact with another character because a leadership -4 (due to my BSB in the same unit) to reroll all hits is really nice for 15 points.
It would pretty much work the same way as before, big block of ghouls with character support flanked by the mortis engines and the zombies running around somewhere to tarpit something and / or slam into the flank of whatever the Ghouls are fighting to give a banner and musician + flank. Hexwraiths run around to harrass people and eventually slam into the rear of things and hopefully chop them down. I really like the feel of it... the other idea would be to try to fit in a unit of black knights- though I'm not really sure where as everything is to tight on points with the double mortis engines.
