AbusePuppy over on 3++ has started a series of articles on re-doing the tyranid codex. He has posted the generic hive rules such as synapse and SITW and done HQs so far. It is quite interesting and adds the flavour and options necessary that would have made more sense in the current dex (eg - hive tyrant also has onslaught and catalyst psychic powers; tervigon is more expensive but can spawn the other gaunts for a points increase (spinegaunts are free and I suspect when he gets to troops they will be the same cost as termagants too - which they shoud have been).
Lots of great stuff in there (is GW paying attention!), although as one commenter pointed out you have to be careful to not be OP. For example the Parasite is much better in AbusePuppys fandex but may be OP in killing characters/MC - I like the commenter's idea of d3 wounds instead of instant death. Still the Parasite is actually useful as an HQ choice.
While I don't agree with everything and would add a few other changes myself it shows how, with a little thought, the dex could be so much better and make more sense. He should work for GW

lol... except for that Tau hoax he pulled... but hey, that's like weeks ago... Anyhow, this guy is definitely one of the internet gurus when it comes to the nids... strangely enough a couple months ago he was all over the internet saying that the nids weren't that disadvantaged as a codex... yeah then grey knights came out and he changed his tune completely! So I'm definitely going to follow this project with interest as well... sadly fandex's (no matter how well they are done) aren't official for tournies (and would require opponent permission even for friendly games) so we're stuck with the current dex for probably 4 more years... but I for one would certainly play some games with you once the fandex is completed so you can try out the options and how it fares!

a fan dex would be good, as long as he doesn't cross the thin line of a fix to OP lol. id play against it once its finish if someone wanted to try it out

I don't intend to play his fandex no matter what I think of it compared to the official dex. It's just for interest. And I don't always agree with him on many of his points - that's for sure. But he does put a lot of thought into things.
And that's not to say that I hate everything Cruddace did. Not at all. He had a lot of good ideas and some bad and the execution was poorly handled (tervigon is a good example in my mind - a good unit in the current dex (almost a no-brainer for many lists) but if it had been handled in a manner such as in AbusePuppy's fandex I would be happy even if disagreeing on the concept of a walking spawning pool in a battlefield - we wont always agree on everything.
Its just that our current dex appears to have been rushed - a draft sent to press - rather than the final product. If it had been playtested further and edited properly many of the problems could have been sorted out.
