Okay, so was sitting around banging my head against the counter at the Nexus while working today and trying to figure out a unique and cool army concept for Astro.. then it hit me- Gladiator marines using the nipple marines (Sanguinary Guard) as the primary build for it- And even further a color scheme symbolizing that of gladiators in the arena, flesh tone for a good portion of the armor to signify the small amount of armor worn by Gladiators, save the helmets, shoulders / greaves, and generally arms... I think it would look super sweet! So figuring out a list with it is going to be my new thing, and I'm going to get this done for Astro. Now to decide quickly between mech vs DoA so I can build it up quick- using the Blood Angel codex, of course.
So here's the DoA list I tested out today vs Zack's Tau...
HQ Librarian w/ JP (Shield / Unleash) Sanguinor
Elite Priest w/ PW and JP Priest w/ JP
Troops 5 assault marines (Flamer, PW) 10 assault marines (2 melta, PW) 10 assault marines (2 melta, PF)
Fast attack 7 vanguard veterans (Glaive/ SS, 2 PF, 3 SS)
I modified the list a bit from the one I used against the Tau and the original worked very well... lots of deep striking awesomeness. It gives me enough mobility to be viable, enough FNP marines to hopefully stay around for objectives but small enough for me to assemble / paint in the time required.
Here is the mech version :
HQ Librarian (Unleash / Shield) Mephiston (Because I already have the model and he's awesome, so why not?)
Elite Corbulo
Troops 5 assault marines (flamer, PW) in a Razorback (TLPG, LC) 5 assault marines (flamer, PW) in a Razorback (TLPG, LC) 8 assault marines (melta, PF) in a Rhino (SL)
Fast attack 2 x 2 MM attack bikes
That's 1210, still trying to figure out what to do with the last 290 points... can do two vindicators or another rhino assault squad or a Dread in a Drop pod and another unit of attack bikes. Ultimately I like the idea of them being on foot more, but I'm also trying to find a good balance between the super awesome theme idea I have in my head and trying to not jam a bunch of vehicles into my list. (Wanting to really only have transports in it) So help me brainstorm! What do you think? Super sweet idea? Awful and too much in the time I have available? I'm wanting to do it and am pretty gungho about it being my loyalist army, and my BA army so it works hehe.

Well you certainly have enough time... Astro is the end of June... and even the foot version is only 36 infantry, which is quite doable... so don't let the time frame stop you... Very cool theme, and I want to see you pull it off... that said, even though it's arguably more competitive to have the vehicles... I'm not really sure theme wise that the mech version would really work... so when you say gladiators are you thinking: A) arena style? ie: brutal style weaponry, splashes of blood, looking like they're engaged in brutal one on one battle... ie: dirty/gritty B) Legion style with the bronzed armor ie: more of a clean look but still looking like the fighting forces of that time period C) Greek / Roman gods that are decending upon the battlefield (ie: otherworldly style) D) something totally different that I'm missing... lol.... these are the kinds of styles that immediately pop in my mind with those models and when you say "gladiator"... and sounds like DOA is the clear winner with that theme (even if it's choice "D"!) Just my scattered thoughts and two cents....

I'm thinking more A with a little bit of possible mixing of the clean look but still fighting bit- since Gladiators often were cleaned before being presented, though I'm undecided between those two ideas of dirty/gritty and clean.
And the only problem in my mind with DoA for it is that they would then be flying around- not really the kind of style I'd picture when thinking of Gladiator, there for some reason is a nice idea with the hatch of the rhino falling and them rushing out of it like Gladiators would into the arena upon the gates being opened...
Glad you like the idea though! I'm just stumped between the two ideas that I have stuck in my head for the theme- and whether or not the vehicles would have any place (given the idea I described above) and what kind of way the color scheme would fit on the vehicles. Lemme see if I can get something to make my color scheme on to show you.

With the mech list, I really think you need a second priest. One FNP bubble is going to force you to bunch up. You could always trade corbulo for 2 regular priests if the points are too tight.
I would also recommend an honor guard with JPs, you get a free FNP bubble and you can tool them up for either shooting or assault

Yeah, I was torn between the VV and another priest as another idea for the mech list- gives me something that can jump in and threaten backfield firing units though they are less useful against fully meched up opponents sadly... Lots of tactical options to try to figure out before the tournament- it's all in weighing the ability to fit into the flavor of army I'm going for and what I enjoy.
If I was able to use the Contemptor Dreadnought model as my Furioso Dread then I'd probably put the Dread in a pod in the list for sure and probably a suicide 5 man JP squad to jump in and melta stuff / score objectives.

I was torn between the VV and another priest That sounds like your wishing for an honor guard

My VV is 7 strong, with lots of storm shields and power fists to go MC hunting- the HG however is limited to 5 wounds, one of which is the priest....
That is my primary issue with an HG though one in a rhino wouldn't be terrible I guess.... I'll try it this saturday.

Yeah, I'm tweaking trying to fit figure what pieces of my 1850 to cut to stay strong at 1500. It's really tough. BA really have to shoehorn to get everything they need at 1500.

So the Mech list I want to test out would be this :
Librarian (Sword, Unleash/Shield) Mephiston Honor Guard (Chapter Banner, 3 SS, DLC) in a Razorback (TLPG, LC)
Corbulo
5 assault marines (Melta) in a Razorback (TLPG, LC) 5 assault marines (Flamer, PW) in a Razorback (TLPG, LC) 5 assault marines (Flamer, PW) in a Razorback (TLPG, LC) 8 assault marines (Melta, PF) in a Rhino (SL)
So yes, I have very little melta- but I will have the Libby run around punching face at STR 10 with the HG and will change between Shield and Unleash based on the board I'm playing on and how much cover is available... The other option is to drop the HG and the non special weapon razorback squad, put two units of two MM attack bikes, a priest and 6 Vanguard Vets with 2 PF and 3 SS.
The nice thing about the razorback list is that it would only require me to buy 5 boxes of Sanguinary guard and order the razorback bits...
JP list would likely remain the same, requiring me to purchase 6 boxes of Sanguinary guard. The razorback bits wind up being about the same as the extra box of SG- so now it's debate between mech and having to paint all those extra vehicles or not mech and risk getting charged more often by better assault units... keeping in mind I've been able to work an idea into the mech list working into the theme while I'm having a little more trouble with the JP list idea. Just the flying gladiators doesn't seem to make as much sense lol.

Also for the vehicles I'm going to go very dark- black with some grey damage like streaks along it and some rust colored dry brushing over it to make them look rusty and used, most like the gates of the arena then machines of war... The doors are going to have some likely paintwork to make them appear more like gates then anything. Actually pretty excited about this!

You could use thin little bits (maybe something the size of toothpicks?) to make grates as the doors (assuming they aren't already glued). The you could paint them golden to make the grates really stand out.

Currently weighing the differences between Twin linked assault cannons for the razorbacks or the las/plas... one helps more vs MC while the other helps more vs massed infantry- So not entirely sure though I'm thinking las/plas is the safer bet in general... I do love me some assault cannons though.
