I'm running a Dwarf Thane BSB with runic armour - 1+ Armour save, re-roll, immune to Killing Blow, etc. I'm using three bigger blocks of troops as follows: - 27 Longbeards, full command, shield hand weapon, Master Rune of Grungni standard - 30 Warriors, Musician, Stnd bearer, Great weapons - 22 Hammerers, full command, 2x Rune of Sanctuary on banner (5+ Magic Ward)
Typically I have thrown him in with my Longbeards, who have tried to hold up units in the centre. Units to either side could benefit from the 5+ missile ward from their banner and the BSB re-rolls.
However the Old Grumbler rule on the Longbeards let any unit within 6" re-roll Panic tests, which I think would be the majority of Leadership re-rolls I would be getting with the BSB.
Am I wasting the BSB re-roll in a unit that provides (kind of) the same thing? Would he be better placed in another unit to spread the range a little bit? Besides the big units, I have another couple small ones and war machines. Cheers.

I would definitely keep him in with the longbeards for a number of reasons:
That block will be a very solid centre, and although the longbeards let nearby units reroll panic, that's it... terror, break tests, etc. aren't rerolled... which is why you need the bsb to range out to both sides...
plus you're going to want the longbeards in the middle of your lines due to the relatively short range on the 5+ ward vs. shooting (which is invaluable!) The longbeards are your least likely unit to break... therefore the least likely to lose the bsb...

So where did you end up putting him for the tourney?
Did it work out?

Was with the Longbeards, but the whole unit was gone by turn 3 both games Couldn't pass a break test to save my life yesterday. Like, I am doing a flank charge, losing the combat, and breaking with steadfast. And you know how well dwarfs flee...even from other dwarfs it was bad!! Anyway, it was fun and I''m looking forward to getting some more games in. Edit: That's not quite true. My warmachine crews were holding and survivng very well. Organ gun crew for 3 turns against 5 Dark Riders.
