Okay... I'd just like to field this once... perfectly legal under 8th ed.
Characters:
Vamp lord - blood drinker, bloody hauberk, black periapt, dread knight, red fury, walking death
Vamp BSB - drakenhoff banner, dread knight, walking death
Vampire - flying horror, summon creatures of the night, flayed hauberk, dispel scroll
Core: 50 zombies 50 zombies 50 zombies
Special: 10 fell bats
Rare: 8 blood knights, strigos banner, kastellan with sword of kings
2250 points
So the lord and bsb go with the blood knights... their walking death + BSB combo means that on a charge they have CR 6 before hitting with 14 S7, 5 S4, 4 S5 with killing blow, and 4 S5 attacks that heal the unit. Oh, and everything rerolls to hit.
The zombies trundle up the field looking awesome... doing absolutely nothing but hopefully pinning something in place while the blood knights get around to them.
the vampire flying with his bat buddies starts behind the zombies (this vamp gets a 4+ look out sir from the zombies if actually targetted by shooting just for extra insurance) to give them a 8" start up the field. He then hops past them to threaten any war machines or shooters. ;D

wow sounds pretty crazy. all your zombies would hold up a lot. i know during the tournement i didn't really know about vampires counts so i spread my forces thinking they could kill the zombies and such by them selves. Not knowing the blood knights with vampires are crazy and thats were most of the points of an army are. well im still learning.

Nice list, The only thing it's the Vamp lord that is a little fragile in duel, Example Greater Deamon Skull Taker etc. Also, you only have one big hitter but I think new Vamp list we all look like that because there's not really an other way to be competitive.

oh this isn't to be competitive... it's to cover the table with a shambling horde of zombies... and a flying horde of plastic bats.... because even if I don't win a single game... it would look awesome and the deathstar is to smack into Franks' horde of saurus... that's basically their entire job.

Man....What freaks me out the most is that with half decent rolls a lot of my high elf units can eliminate those 50 zombie blocks in a single combat once rez is factored in....

yep... it's completely possible! the zombies are there to be a speed bump.... the only real hitting power is the blood knights... and due to the combined rules of blooddrinker, ION and initiative based combat, made the blooddrinker even better! (because I'm no longer going first on the charge, any casualties I do suffer will get raised by the blooddrinker vamp lord, and although they'd be striking only at S5 - they lose charging bonuses - all still get to strike!)

....yeah seeing how well zombies are doing this edition (ie: don't even function as a respectable speed bump anymore) any thoughts of actually building this are out the window...
... but I would agree that the mantic undead figures are top notch - and cheap!

wait so zombies arnt that good any more ? They were ever good? They're better and worse in 8th. They're cheap and come in huge numbers, which is a plus, and will actually get to strike now with step up. That said, the enemy will be able to kill them in absolute droves now. Still a decent tarpit I would say.

the problem with zombies is that they won't kill anything at all (hitting on 5's wounding on 4's at the best of times, more likely worse) and take crumble wounds by how much they lost combat, so there's a threshhold where if you take X number of wounds (normally half the unit size or less depending on what you're fighting) you pick up the entire unit... so 50 zombies will actually not function as a tarpit against too many things for more than a round.... especially if they charge, because they have to go through 2 rounds of combat before they can be invoked again on a magic turn....
If they lose combat by 10-15 each round (very likely to happen against a ranked unit) you pick them up after the two rounds of combat (as you double the kills as they turn into combat res)
they are a great combat against single models who cannot do enough attacks to kill them, or even non-elite calvary, but a ranked unit = death...
.....unless of course you can flank....
