i just wanted to start a post asking what your favorit codex/ army book is and why.
mine is the WHFB lizardmen book because it is so easy and fast to make full armies as the armies personal magic items are located reat after the units so lord, heroes, core, special, rare, magic items.

The 3rd Ed Tyranid Codex that had the "Build your own Hive Fleet" section in the back where it gave you the base point costs and all the upgrade choices for every single unit in the codex. So you could literally biomorph anything the way you wanted it!
With all the upgrades, you could make your Gaunts retarded good. But they would cost 27 points each lol! WS/BS/S/T 4, 4+ Save, Fleet, Rending Claws & Scything Talons, Glands, Senses, any tons of other stuff lol! Best Gaunts EVER Gogogo!

8th edition ogres book... that one book revamped the army from one that was bottom of the barrel to competitive, while still giving lots of great choices and great new models.....

Chaos Space Marines 3.5, at least by the time the last revision came out. Though it suffered from some big layout issues, the sheer versatility of the book in terms of what you could do was phenomenal, all while keeping the core fluff of the Gods in mind.

goes without saying, 40k ork book for me, a well written codex with tons of versatility that only seems to be getting better with age.

For me the 4th edition tyranid dex. Yes it had some issues, such as fexes in elites that created the nidzilla mess. However, the dex had some awesome stuff such as allowing a lot of customization of most units and I liked the weapon strength tied to the creature using it. The army seemed to have a lot more flavour IMO.
The other was the 4th edition space marine dex. I loved the chapter traits idea that allowed for the option of making your own chapter with some pros and cons. The traits idea was good, it just needed to be adjusted a bit to make it work better instead of tossing it in the next dex. A lot of uniqueness was lost.

2nd Edition Tyranid Codex.
That was a great book. They all were back then. Nids had there own mission list and at the start of the game each enemy unit could be randomly affected. "Jones is acting strangely" caused one squad member to be "Jones". Every turn you would roll and on a 6 he explodes as though hit by a barbed strangler! He died instantly of course. Sometimes a small nid organism would attack the crew of a vehicle. It could attack the driver and cause it to go out of control. I had a blast with my 2nd ed nids. They were ugly though.
Runners up would be the 2nd ed Chaos Codex, 3.5 Chaos Marine Codex and the Rogue Trader Twin books "Slaves to Darkness". The rogue trader books especially are treasure troves of lore about chaos, and tell the original story of the Horus Heresy.

you used to be able to take carnifex's for just over a hundred points as an elite choice as well as a heavy choice... I think as long as it wasn't over 115 points or something like that (book at home)
...so people used to take three elite carnifex's and three heavy carnifex's with a tyrant HQ... 7 monstrous creatures for about 800-900 points left a LOT of points left over for all the other cool stuff...
and gave rise to the "nidzilla" build (basically a bunch of godzillas stomping around the battlefield)
weirdly enough you can actually get more MC wounds with the new book as now you can take MC's in HQ, Troop, Fast and Heavy... just not elite... lol....

Yeah, the Rogue Trader books were all fantastic that way, though largely for all the fluff that was inside.

yeah, I wish the marine dex had something like the chapter traits to make custom chapters (or make premade ones for well known chapters) then they could save paper and morph all the dexes into textbook sized dex (probably "have" to sell for $100 XD )
