Well I dont mind any painting guide as long as people that put the time and effort to finish their army have a big difference in scoring then someone showing up with only basic 3 colours that he finish the day before the tournament...

As not much of a painter (yet) I feel that that scoring list from Da Boyz would give me a chance to earn some points, and wouldn't basically auto-eliminate me from best-overall just because I'm a novice painter.
Thumbs up to that suggestion!

I had a thought last night while driving home.
Why not have 2 categories for painting? One for Best Army, and one for Best Model. You could make it really easy by doing something like giving everyone a little colored piece of card to put their model for best model on and then just display it with their army during judging, allowing the judges to quickly score for both.
It's just a thought. What do others think?

There will be one for best painted... these trophies / awards get pricey to get nice ones... we're also trying to encourage painting an ARMY to a high standard for best painted... if someone paints the basic three colours on their army but paints one ork super nice, should they get a best painted award?
One thing I was looking at was having people vote for "best army" to hopefully influence the painting scores a bit... add some participation from everyone... and provide a way to have a tie-breaker if need be with best painted.... so similar to what you said Ray, everyone getting to have ONE vote for what army they visually liked the best....
Also there is no way I'm playing during the tourney, so I'll have more time to devote to paint judging... If someone drops out last minute (no refunds after a certain point though sorry) then we'll use the "buy" system that we've been implementing the last couple tournies... where first person to lose a game in the round (so long as it's before a certain cut off time) plays agains the person who got the "buy".
also I'm going to be a bit more insistent that when people display their armies for paint judging on their display boards that they either put in front the ones they want closer looks at (ie: conversions) to demonstrate their level of skill....
I'm not going to pick up everyone of those 180 orks to try and see which five are cool conversions...
...also a word to the wise... if your army is in a box lid or on a lunch tray or otherwise not "displayed" it actually does negatively impact your painting score... sorry, but it's MUCH harder to see what you've done if it isn't displayed openly... just simply not being able to see your models makes it harder to judge...and I tend not to pick up every model... and I tend to not have eagle-eye vision these days... so display your work with pride so I can see it!!!!

Ok, It was just thought I had, I figured it would be a bit late to alter stuff anyways.
I do like the idea of everyone getting 1 vote for best painted, but I think you will get a better result if you force people to vote another persons army (Ie you can't vote for yourself).

the only thing I dont like about voting is that most of the time there is one army that stand out and that we prefer because its local and awesome for example Shannon necron last tournament but that guy with the Eldar had an awesome army too and I dont want that guy to lose point because everyone vote the same army...
I personally think its a waste of time voting for our best army and I trust Shannon to be a good judge for painting since hes a good painter...

I think votes being used as a tie breaker is kind of nice because if both people get the same score who wins? there has to be a tie-breaker right? I mean it can't be battle points or sportsmanship scoring as there isn't any painting involved in those factors!
