I figured I'd post this up, since it was a really really close game. A Ton of fun.
Jason's Tau vs Ray's Space Wolves + Imperial Guard
Round 4: Another Grudge Match
So as usual, me and Jason roll up the Scouring and Dawn of War. Terrain setup is pretty even, but is a little bit more sparse than usual, with only 10 pieces of terrain on the table.
He wins the roll off for setup, and elects to place first. He sets up his 3 objectives along the length of his board edge, spreading them out quite a bit. I deploy one objective in my backfield, with 2 more in midfield to advance onto.
I roll up Intimidating Presence (enemy units within 12" of warlord must use their lowest LD instead of highest), and his commander rolls up -1 to my reserve rolls.
He wins the roll off for first turn, and deploys his aegis and stealth-star centrally, with the scoring pathfinders alongside to control the objective protected by his aegis line, with his crisis team nearby for support. His broadsides setup with good firing lanes to corner me from each flank and he spreads his fire warriors out evenly so that he'll have at least 2 scoring units near each of his objectives. His Ion-Head deploys on my far right flank.
I deploy my aegis nearly opposite to his, with both my riflemen on my right flank so that I can bring maximum str 7 firepower onto his right flank if need be, but I leave myself good central firing lanes as well. My Russes and GH Rhinos setup on my left, with the Russes in the lead, hiding out of LOS of his broadsides on my far right, and in hull-down cover from his broadsides on the left. My Wolf Lord hides amongst the vehicles.
I don't seize, and we roll and have night fighting first turn. Since everything he has except his devilfish has Blacksun Filters, this is already a bad situation for me.
We roll up the objective values. His backfield far right one is the 4! my Grey Hunters would literally have to cross over 60" of table to contest it. My backfield one is a 3, and my midfield ones are a 2 and 1, while his objective behind his aegis line is also a 3, and his far left objective is a 2.
Things just went from bad to worse, I decide immediately there's no way I can contest the 4 value objective, however I feel I might be able to clear out his other objectives, and if I can score a bunch of the lesser value ones, I could still have a chance.
Turn 1)
Tau:
Thanks to my very defensive deployment, his pathfinders are out of range or LOS to use their markerlights are much more than a rhino. His Railguns all hit their mark, but I manage to make all of my 4+ or 5+ saves. His Ion Head goes to work on one of my rhinos, removing 2 hull points and immobilizing it. His 2 devil fish advance, one on each flank and move flat out.
SWAG:
I start my first turn, and I move forward with my rhinos, but thanks to the traffic jam caused by 2 pieces of impassable terrain and my back-from-the-line deployment, I can't move straight forward, or cross into midfield very quickly. My Dreads move into ruins for good firing lanes and I expend all of my Str 7 into a flat-out devilfish, since everything else except the Ionhead is out of LOS. It shakes it off and laughs at me with no damage. One of my 2 functional rhinos doesn't move flat out in order to searchlight FWs holding the objective on my left, which I follow up by shelling with my demolishers, killing 5. The GH from my immobilized rhino disembark and move up behind the russes, out of LOS. My Lord stays out of LOS, but get himself in position to threaten a large portion of midfield.
Turn 2:
Tau:
After some minor shuffling to regain jink saves, the Tau open fire. This time their markerlights are in range and working. I shake off His Railguns fail to damage my Russes, but he scores a pen on my central rhino and knocks off the storm bolter. His crisis team follows up with their missiles and wreck it. Forcing the GH to disembark behind it, or be shot by the stealthstar and some fire warriors. His broadsides on the left split fire vs my 2 dreads, but I make both my 4+ cover saves. His Ion Head shoots the blob and causes a causality.
SWAG:
I look at the table and realize this is bad. I haven't even crossed midfield, and I'm already basically on foot. I set out to try and do some damage to decrease the storm of incoming fire. My 2 central GH squads on foot move up and run forward, trying to pressure his central 3 value objective. My Grey hunter squad in the last rhino bails on on my far left, and then opens fire on the remaining fire warriors. Wiping them out. My demolishers shell the broadsides and but remove only their shield drones. My riflemen and blob again pound his devilfish (which this time only has a 3+) and after scoring 8 hits, only manage a single pen, which gets disruption podded away. Assault sees the TWC Lord smash the left flank devilfish into tiny pieces, exploding it and forcing the fire warriors inside to flee.
Turn 3:
Tau:
Tau again only do some minor shuffling. The fleeing FW on the left regroup. They take some snap shots at the Wolf lord but he is unharmed. The now unsupported broadsides Fire railguns into my Russes, but cause no damage (AV14 ftw). His stealth star, some FWs and crisis suits pound my leading GH squad, causing 4 casualities, and with the demoralizing effect of having markerlights pointed at you, broke and fell back 10". His right flank broadsides split fire and this time had some pathfinder support, reducing my cover save to 6+ and improving the BS of the broadsides to 5. One of my riflemen exploded, and took a guardsman with him. The Ion head fired cross board to support the left broadsides and took out a pair of GHs.
SWAG:
my GH regrouped and moved forward, the left most squad preparing to assault fire warriors, while the central squad advanced into the open. The falling back squad regrouped and moved to help out against the devilfish, getting within 12" for rapid fire with plasma guns and denying use of his Dpod. They managed to score a single glance. Again, the follow up of Str 7 was shrugged off with no damage to the devilfish. The demolishers moved up and shelled the left broadside team again, his time forcing them to go to ground in order to survive. The Wolf Lord threw himself into the heart of the enemy, assaulting the stealthstar in the aegis line, but taking a wound from overwatch on the way in. He smashed 3 drones and a stealth suit, and the squad rolled insane heroism to stay in combat (with my warlord trait + winning by 4, he was taking the test on Ld 4!). The GH on the left easily cleaved through the FWs, choosing not to use their wolf banner on such a weak target, easily wiping them out.
Turn 4:
Tau:
Jason starts off his turn my shuffling about again, and elects to concentrate his shooting on my midfield GHs, his disembarks his FWs from his devilfish and pours their rapid fire along with his crisis team and more FWs into my lead GH squad, he kills 6, but they pass leadership. His Ion head and devilfish go to work on the weakened squad and reduce them from 6 to 3. His broadsides who have stood up snapfire their smart missiles at my grey hunters, but cause no damage. And his right broadsides and pathfinders explode my last rifleman. At this point, Jason elects to make an interesting move. He notes that if my wolf lord cleaves out of combat this round, he'll be able to basically run through his lines, kill 2 scoring units, as well as slay the warlord, and be pretty much unstoppable. He elects to CHARGE with his pathfinders! The risk pays off, after an unbelievable roll he causes 6 wounds on the wolf lord, and he rolls a pair of 1s! Tau beat and killed a TWC lord in combat! WHAT!!!!
SWAG: This is just bad now, my huge gamble to stop his firepower has failed, and my 2 central grey hunter squads are down to 4 and 3 members a piece. I look at the board and do some quick math. I quickly realize that I MUST TAKE his 3 value objective to win. Easier said than done when you have 7 grey hunters, a rhino and a pair of russes vs half a tau army. I go for it. My Grey hunters move towards the objective in his aegis and open fire on his pathfinders, killing 3 and forcing them to flee off the table. My rhino them moves up and blocks the return firepower. My russes expose their sides to the broadside team in order to shell the central crisis team, removing a number of their drones, with one blast scattering back and killng the lead grey hunter! FRIENDLY FIRE MANGGGG. My blob opens fire on the disembarked FWs and reduces them to just 2 models, and they fall back. My lead grey hunter squad attempts to charge the crisis team but fails the roll on a 3, and with their standard rerolling the 1 they roll another 1! My other GHs charge the devilfish and lose a member to fleshcettes.
Turn 5:
Tau: Jason realizes I`ve commited to taking his 3 objective, and he goes to work cleaning up my threats, My both my very weak GH squads get finished off. And then he dumps a metric ton of firepower into my rhino, but by some miracle causes no damage. His railguns all elect to shoot big threats, one of them exploding a Russ and causing a HP of damage to another, as well as damaging my back field chimera in an attempt to deny me my backfield objective. He stacks up everything he can as close to the 3 value objective in his aegis line as he can, mustering the 2 falling back FWs, his Crisis Team, as well as the remaing Stealthsuits and his Commander.
SWAG:
My Rhino immediately tank shocks into the aegis line, dozering its way through the FW and Stealthsuits, who both pass leadership, but elect only to move out of the way, and away from the objective, My Artillery from my blob and remaing russ go to work, killing a FW and forcing them to flee off the board. My last 7 grey hunters push in, and bolt pistol while preparing to charge the crisis team. they easily make the charge but are forced to make 3 overwatch saves and do. They pop their saved wolf banner and murder the crisis suits, consolidating onto the objective cleared for them by the Rhino!
We roll a 2 for the game to continue. and we measure the objective, The stealthstar is 3.5 inches away from the objective, letting the GH claim it for the against-the-odds victory!
The game ends with Tau controlling 4 points of objectives to my 8, but make it up on secondaries via first blood and slay the warlord, while I only have linebreaker.
An incredibly close game, well played. I was sure for about 3 turns I was done, and had the game continued. I certainly would of lost.
