Now 40k has definitely not been plagued with as much of the balance issues as the last edition of Warhammer Fantasy was, that's for sure, so some differences would be somewhat less glaring.... but for sake of discussion, what do people think are the "top" armies power-wise, what is in the mid-field, and what is in the lower tier of power armies? thoughts???

think Tau have a very strong game going for them, Orcs are still very high on the list as they took the beatstick from the GW devs and reverse beat the pee out of em. Marines will always have a solid foundation from which to work; but in my opinion, that's about it. Nids got the bad nerf, and there hasn't been anything new for the other races worth mentioning for quite some time, you damn WH fantasy guys hogging all of the developer time.

I think some Eldar list can be over power. Guards is definitely one on top. Orcs can have nasty list too. My favorite is still BA they rock!

In my opinion here is how they fall. 1st tier armys: all loyalist marines, IG, eldar, orks 2nd tier armys: tau, daemonhunters, chaos marines, daemons 3rd tier armys: whitch hunters, nids, necrons, dark eldar

Yeah, I'd say Trevor is close, but I'd probably put 4 tiers in there, about like this:
1: Space Wolves, Imperial Guard: These guys will win well more than 50% of the top-tier tourneys you see. 2: Blood Angels, Eldar, Orks, Salamanders: These armies have some more limited builds that are effective, but still fare well overall. I put Salamanders in there because Vulkan marines are what shows up for Codex at most big events. 3. Rest of Codex Marines: Chaos Space Marines, Tyranids, Tau, Daemons, Sister of Battle, Dark Eldar. These lists CAN do well, but are VERY handicapped in terms of "competitive" builds, are are much more reliant on either high player quality or luck. Don't assume they are an easy win, but unless handled well they don't stack up. 4. Necrons, Daemonhunters, Rest of Witchunters, Dark Angels: Once in a while you might see an OK list out of these books, but they're generally rendered obsolete by other books or new editions. Not something I'd start if I wanted to be competitive. Doublewing Dark Angels is still a somewhat viable build.

I agree with Matt. I just wish the Black Templars had a better tier level than 5..... We need a new Codex to bring us up to date.

*laughs at the people who've had at least one new codex since 3rd edition* Well if the rumours hold true, my wait should finally be over this year and I'll have a wonderful new Dark Eldar army to relearn and hopefully enjoy playing again

from what I hear of the dark eldar, they'll be jumping pretty high up the ladder! My next army in my collection will be necrons, however their lack of codex til next year is likely going to mean I won't bother til then.... GW's lack of updating their codecii does cost them money from people like me. I actually nearly bought necrons instead of my Orks, but after what they did to the Nids I was frustrated enough to just not want another army I viewed as potentially also frustrating (when I only owned one 40k army at the time!) I know I do want the souless robots (for modelling ideas and such) but figure I'll save myself a few months of being frustrated... then if they totally screw them up with the new book, I won't know any different! (ignorance is bliss!)

That is obviously sufficient ;D lol

Ahh yes the update of some of the most useless-over point costed vehilce upgrades (other than Horrofex..which was great when it was a defensive weapon) and a bunch of wargear that really didn't do anything that made it worth taking (other than xenospasm). Sure they made our jetbikes cheaper, but when they gave all bikes Turboboost, they became the worst bikes in the game. Only good thing that came out of the update was that Wyches became worth taking (though I still never went Wych cult). I accepted that the DE were going to be a long time in getting and love from GW. I had a lot of fun years playing them and found a pretty good list that served me well for many a tournament. At least all the rumours point to them being a good army again, and the new models sound like they will be very very pretty. Here's hoping for easier to transport Raiders
