I'm fairly bored.. so I decided to compare the factions to historical empires(don't worry, I will not get into controversial topics)
the tau was the most obvious as the roman empire, as they both started off with small cities and tribes, but with overwhelming tech, are quickly expanding. as well as the caste system.
I had a bot of problem with the orks and nids, but I decided that the orks are most like the vikings, as they fight not for profit, but for the fight itself.
the nids seem to resemble the mongol empire, in that it had little "control" over the areas it "conquered", and, like the mongol warmachine, it's main aim was resource.
however, the orks also resemble the mongols in that there are many scattered tribes that are rarely united.
the imperium I had REAL trouble with, but in the end, I compared it to ancient greece, in that the army is mainly drafted for self-defence of planes(cities), and that the worlds(city states) are reasonably independent.
and anything else, I'm not familiar with

Many of the Astartes chapters are drawn straight from historical references, Thousand Sons from egypt, Space Wolves from the Norse, White Scares from Mongols, Dark Angels from Feudal europe, etc.
Tau always sturck me as very communist, all the talk about the greater good and whatnot, granted there hasn't been a communist state that had specialized castes like the Tau but I suppose that's why it's fiction.

without going into too much controversy.. castes? they DO exist in one certain "communist" nation but yeah, I'm trying to look at the historical references here... so the tau=rome, because it uses superior tech, started with a very small empire, and are rapidly expanding. even the kroots.. which.. I think are similar to the axillary troops of rome just my 2 cents

not sure about symbolism but i think nids and deamons are easy to think about how their higherarcy or culture would go. nids are an insect hive culture, the larger bugs run the lower bugs from the central hive mind. where as daemons i think of a animalistic or cave man culture the stronger daemons are over the weaker ones, and if you want to move up you become more power full and kick the butt of the daemon over you (or become smarter and trick it)
orks are a little more evolved culture but not much, again stronger rule but they do have money it is their teeth but they do have currency

Eldar, I don't really think fit well into this. They're for a lack of a better word Eldar. Highly arrogant, self absorbed psychic aliens who almost worship their souls.
Tau, are a mix. They're not exactly like any one thing that we've experienced. They're the deep end of Fascism and not the N word version from history exactly. They're more true to the ideal of Fascism then a certain group ever was as they're not corrupted by human emotions and desires. Literally every single part of the Tau apart from O'Shovah buy into the Greater Good ideal completely. They're completely willing to work for the idea of it, and it's not like they have to take into account money or something like that as far as we know. There hasn't been much delving into Tau society other then what I've stated.
