you do not have to declare your army when you sign up... you can leave that until you provide your army list...
...this is for registration only... you can change your army and list constantly over the next several months... I assume people will want to test out and try different things before they commit.

lol, it's more laziness. I live a good 40 min from Nexus and didn't want to have to make a trip just to drop my list to Shannon.

+1 internets points for Ray.
Also, 'Ray' backward is 'Yar'. Pirate Nicknames are awesome, so a further +1 yar points.

Just a note...
It would seem that sign ups are far lower than expected. I realize this may be due to a number of factors including the xmas season, having to prepay and having to be fully painted. There may be other issues, but this is based on some feedback from PM posts I've received.
not much we can do about xmas... it's the timing of when the signup was opened up, trying to keep the tourney around the same time of year as last year and give lots of notice with the player pack etc.
pre-pay... sorry, but like I've explained previously it's just too much money to front and too much risk when people don't show the day of (as everything was purchased beforehand)... we're looking at an upfront expenditure of approximately $500-$600 BEFORE prizes (in swag, trophies and the big award this year)... I can't front that much money... just too big a risk...
fully painted - I don't know what to say on this one... it seemed to be a big issue with last year's tourney (although every other bigger tournies around have 100% painted rules). this wasn't a problem in the past I think because for those of us who've played locally here for a number of years will remember, there used to be a minimum 50% painted rule for ALL local nexus tournies... (including fantasy where you can have over 200 models in a force!)... that was lifted (supposedly temporarily) to encourage attendance (especially at fantasy which was starting to slip, and required MUCH more models to be painted).... so with 0% painting requirements locally, suddenly people weren't painting much of anything... there's still many of us that won't show up without a fully painted army... and many more who have nearly 100% of their force painted... I know this cannot be the ONLY reason why sign ups are low right now (ie: there are many more people with fully painted armies that I know of than are signed up!) but it may be a detriment to some people.
So basically I'm throwing it out there that we should probably talk about the barriers to signing up, and whether or not we can eliminate these barriers, or if we will have this tourney.
There is a deadline for ordering these things that has to be met of course... and if we don't have enough people signed up, we run a huge risk ordering things... and really, how do we know how much stuff to order? we either order too much (and have to make the choice of crappy prize support like other tournies do, or losing money) or not enough and then people will be disappointed when there isn't enough to go around!
This is a large amount of work that I'm very willing to do, and I've put many hours in on this already... but in the end it's up to you guys and whether or not you want this to happen. If you don't, that's fine, I gave it my best shot, and last year's tourney I think was fantastic (a few hiccups but nothing is perfect). I think we have the player base to run the kind of tournies seen in Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Quebec.... I also think that you guys do a lot of work on your armies and deserve recognition for that, and top notch support for all the hard work you do... this tourney is a way to give you an experience that's fun and rewarding...
...like I said, we cannot do this without your support though... If you want this to happen, you really need to sign up.... the first 15 signups cover basic expenses of the tourney (very basic... as in no prize support whatsoever beyond swag and trophies)... if we don't hit this threshold by the date to order, the tourney won't happen... I'm really sorry guys, but I just don't have the money to front the whole thing...
so if you're planning on attending, please sign up... at minimum I need a month to ensure all the orders can be submitted (trophies are 3-4 weeks lead time for ordering an engraved product)... that would be January 16th to be safe....

we had 30 last year with another 6-7 that wanted to sign up but signups were closed at that point... so we have the player base... that's not the problem....
and we've had quite a few additional players locally since that time...
Tommy is signing up as well this week....

All valid points, Shannon; the money needs to be paid well up front if you are going to order stuff - you or Mike absolutely should not have to pay out of pocket for prizes! I am behind but I plan to be paid up this week (if I'm not please berate me until I do). I agree with your points on painting as years ago we always had painting requirements for tourneys (except ard' boyz or the odd tourney). I also want to say that the tourney last year was great and I'm sure that our gaming community appreciates all the work you have put into it to make it happen!
