Hey, I apologize if this is a bit of a low brow question, and even more so if it has already been discussed on this forum.
Reading the other guard thread a bit, and being someone interested in possibly putting a guard force on the table one of these days -
Can I get a brief overview of what makes the vendetta arguably the best flier in the game for its value? I guess I don't get how big of a difference the lascannons make compared to a valk load out. Or how it is better than other transport fliers like a Storm raven or Scythe.
Basically just fishing for an explanation to the blanket statements about every guard army should have one, the best lists have nine, its crazy good for its points yada yada..
The main reason for this being I still haven't played 40k in over a decade, ergo - have no clue as to what is effective and what is not... - and I like the look (of the physical model) with pods / rockets better... dumb reason not to take the superior option probably, but that is why I need convincing.
edit - my suspicion is possibly a prevalence of things that AP1 helps against? - shrugs shoulders...

I'm not that knowledgeable about guards, but, just looking at the stats its not very expensive, its a flyer, and it has three twin linked strength 9 ap 2 shots. which basically guarantees 3 wounds against MC and its got a good chance to take down a trukk or rhino the guards codex, in general, has lots of blast templates and volume of low-strength fire. so the vendetta gives it anti-tank and MC, making it a very good thing to include

One of the best things about it is the price... it's very cost effective point wise... it has three twin linked lascannons and AV 12/12/10... and being a flyer it's very difficult to hit (unless you have skyfire you need 6's just to hit!)
3 twin linked lascannons means that it's great at hunting other flyers... for example it has the ability to down the dreaded helldrake, which is a bane to the ground forces of the guard, and for less points than the drake!
also the ability to squadron (and squadron new rules means immobilized doesn't equal dead!) means you can bring quite a few of them (due to the point cost) because you're not restricted to just three fast attack slots...
adding heavy bolter sponsons is very cheap, and gives some extra utility once you've destroyed all the flyers / armor in the opposing army! also makes it less likely you'll just autolose a lascannon if you get a weapon destroyed result on you.
grave cute insertion means you don't have to switch to dangerous hover mode to drop troops off on an objective as you go zooming by...
and it's so damn cheap...
so if you take the valk and upgrade to a lascannon, you're 15 points shy of just getting a vendetta, that not only twin links that lascannon but also adds two twin linked friends along with it!
the valkyrie loses out on twin linking which sucks... especially since your flyers can be a big target to some armies, so you want to make sure when they're zooming around they can do their thing as reliably as possible...
scythes are pretty great, don't get me wrong... but a vendetta will kill a sycthe long before a scythe kills a vendetta... the extra AV and S9 shots versus rhino armor and S7 shots back... but scythes rock vs. infantry...
stormraven is also good, but nearly double the price as the vendetta, and doesn't have as good weapon loadout (although better rear armor and can carry a dread... which is good too!)

And nobody talks about the awesome versatility of the Nephalim.
Makes me a sad Dark Angel. :/

Not enough people know what it does yet =P I'll talk over and over again about the piece of crap that is my Storm Talon....but I have one and it's fluffy, so I'm damn well going to take it!

My smurfs love their storm talon..... but they're smurfs though, they're pretty impressed by anything pretty.... never faced the nephalim... I hear it's rough and awesome and cool... but I've never seen it in action... if it's coming to the February tournament though, I'll be watching with interest

And nobody talks about the awesome versatility of the Nephalim. Makes me a sad Dark Angel. :/ You might say your "Flying under the radar..." *evil laugh* Running a Vendetta myself, and currently building Guard, I've found it is an awesome tool to have in your arsenal. 3x TL Lascannon on the Flyer Platform, basically means you can get side armour on a target of choice the turn you come in. That backfield Manticore with side AV10? Dead. That Predator with Side AV 11? Dead. It's an awesome flyer because of it's ability to not only hunt vehicles, but it's got good mobility through hover mode, can transport troops, an awesome weapon loadout, and AV12/12/10 as a Flyer is nearly as tough as they come. and all this for the bargain basement price of XXX points? The internet is in love with this thing as a result of all those things above. However, don't get caught into the hype that Vendettas are the be-all-end-all of flyers. They are certainly a strong utility piece, but many players are making the mistake of overlooking the other Guard Fast Attack choices in favour of the Vendetta, and thinking that the Vendetta can win games by itself. That, it cannot do.
