I just went down to Delaware on vacation to visit friend and to play a massive game of Apocalypse.
It was a 9000 points per side, my team consisted of the 6,500 point list I have posted and an accompanying force of 2500 points worth of necrons which had a pair of monoliths, 3 destroyer arcs and several squads of wraiths for troop destruction and some hard hitting melee choices for tank hunting.
We faced off against 6,500 points worth of IG and 2,500 points of Space Wolves. The guard player fielded a Death Korps of Krieg list including a Shadowsword, 3 Baneblades, 3 basilisk batteries, 4 hydra flak tanks, 3 Leman Russ squadrons, 4 Punishers and a few odds and ends in the form of some special characters and a destroyer or two. The wolves player brought the majority of the troops on their side including a few deep striking units of long fangs and a pair of terminator strike teams.
The board was two 4'x8' tables separated by a 36" long bridge 24" wide. Terrain was placed as well as a "flag" marker deep in the heart of each deployment zone. The agreed upon victory would occur if the opposing side "ran" the opposing side's flag to their own deployment zone or when the opposing side had no more units capable of moving the flag. The flag could only be carried by troops, jump pack infantry and bikes would be reduced to 6" moves if they're carrying the flag and the carrying unit would drop the flag if assaulting or assaulted.
I placed my aegis lines on the edge of the deployment zone 18" away from the board edge. The large units of terminators sat next to the feet of the titans which were put one on each side of the board behind an aegis containing a unit of havocs. The land raider and rhino were poised to charge the bridge and the Hellbrute was stationed on the right flank of our backfield as additional on the fly fire support. The 3destroyer arcs were put behind the land raider and rhino for rapid deployment onto the base of the bridge as another defensive line vs any tanks or troops attempting to take the bridge.
After winning the roll for deployment and first turn our opponents failed to seize the iniative, the game was afoot!
The apocalypse formation I took allowed me a s8 ap3 apocalyptic barrage that hit as many times as I had he choices remaining, meaning I got to roll 8 times. I centred the template over a basilisk squadron and turned them into a small collection of wrecks.
Chaos turn 1
Having barely half my strength on the board vs a solid 85% of the enemy units was daunting to say the least. Bot units of havocs moved to their aegis lines and took up position, the rhino and land raider went flat out onto the bridge followed closely by the destroyer arcs, moving just enough to rip some shots into the imperial lines. The titans spooled their turbo laser destroyers and fired. The Titan on the left flank "Typhus's Wrath" opened up into the Shadowsword deployed across the table from it scoring 4 strength d auto-pen hits resulting in the destruction of the main weapon and three "destroyed" results on the vehicle damage table which caused chain reaction explosions rendering the mighty tank a smoking crater. The Titan on the opposing flank opened up on a pair of Baneblades sandwiched close together and managed to hit both tanks with all 4 shots, I managed to destroy both main guns and immobilize one while dealing half of their hull points in damage due to a lucky destroyed result. The destroyer arcs focused on the non immobilized baneblade and managed to finish it off, a good start for the game.
Imperium turn 1
The imperial lines churned forward, grinding the ground beneath ton after ton of treads. The wolves shot forward onto the bridge with two rhinos, closely followed by a quintet of leman Russes. The Baneblades attempted to damage control their main guns back to life to no avail. The remaining Baneblades line of sight was blocked to everything but a single destroyer arc which it missed with an unlucky scatter. The leman Russes opened up scoring several hits on one of the destroyer arcs making a greasy liquid metal smear out of it.
Chaos turn 2
Reserve rolls went poorly despite the Errol ability if the aegis upgrade and I only got two melta units if terminators and one helldrake. My necron ally fared much better, landing both of her monoliths deep into enemy territory where they began to spit troops like an angry metal llama. My rhino and land raider continued to charge the bridge counting on the weight of fire from the titans to open a few cracks. The helldrake and drop pods moved up the board a full 36", less than halfway to the goal. Shooting consisted of my havocs opening up a pair of leman Russ tanks, the left Titan tore open all 4 hydra flak tanks, reducing two to ruins and removing the main armaments from the other two while his twin proved fairly useless as it dealt but a single hull point to the immobilized baneblade. The destroyer arcs ripped into another leman Russ on the bridge and managed to splatter it and its crew all over the surviving two tanks trying to block the bridge.
Imperium turn 2
The wolves of Russ made their prayers to the machine spirit known, all deep striking wolf units landed on target one of which grabbed our flag and began to make for their line. The surviving basilisk battery opened up and stripped the d shields from one of the titans, scoring a superficial victory. The long fangs scored some lucky snap shots and managed to down the helldrake while the remaining imperial fire focused on the monoliths, destroying it.
Chaos turn 3
The left Titan opened up on the wolf forces in the deployment zone, rendering both units of long fangs and a terminator squad to ashes. The inability to finish off the other terminators would prove to be my undoing as the last unit successfully shrugged off fire from both terminator squads and the Hellbrute. The void shields failed to rise on my right Titan and the remaining monolith kept disgorging unit after unit of tank hunters into the back of the imperial lines while a squad of wraiths managed to end their movement on the flag. My reserve rolls were woefully terrible and only the stormeagle carrying typhus was brought in. The land raider and rhino were blocked from moving forward by two wolf rhinos and were forced to fire, the meltas of the death guard melting one to slag while the lascannons from the land raider cooked the other one, managing to take three of the contained troops with it. Both of my dreadclaw drop pods disgorged their cargo who managed to drop the immobilized baneblade with help from the right Titan. The necrons foolishly (and against my recommendation) moved en masse against the remaining pair of leman Russes blocking the bridge, an action that would prove terrible.
Imperium turn 3
The imperium unloaded a sneaky trick! Two full Valkyrie squadrons entered the board, guns ready to tear, not much movement happened aside from the wolf terminators charging my non shielded right hand Titan. The remaining baneblade opened fire, shredding the monolith in an effective display while the punishers made short work of all but 1 necron foot soldier on the board with help from a pair of leman Russes. It was a grave hit, leaving my team mate with a lone wraith and 2 destroyer arcs, eek! The only good part about them smoking the necrons, was they left my terminators all but unmolested, allowing them to move to the flag and begin the long trek back through heavily occupied lines. The Valkyries reduced the other terminator squad on their side of the board to a smoking ruin much to my chagrin however the pain of the round had yet to end. The terminators who charged the Titan tore into it with not 1 but 3 chain fists, their 9 attacks enough to reduce it to a smoking ruin... Nurgle's rage would prove to be terrible to behold.
Chaos turn 4
The remainder of my forces arrived finally, the last dreadclaw and other helldrake zooming into the fray. The storm eagle carrying typhus disgorged their cargo in the face of the Valkyries and opened fire, taking two out with the fusillade. The terminators and warpsmith charged through the smoking ruin of the Titan to engage the terminators and kept them locked in an attrition that lasted until the foul wolves were exterminated to a man at the end of the following turn. The remaining Titan scored an impressive barrage, destroying the punishers and a leman Russ with some lucky scatters. The havocs took aim and managed to drop another Valkyrie while the flag carriers ran through the smoking tank graveyard that is the imperial side of the board. The land raider fired on the blood claws that got had their numbers thinned by the destruction of their rhino the turn before. The death guard disembarked and after snapping a pair of melta shots into the other blood claws ended up charging them. Typhus and his command squad took the flag from the previous unit and got the flag onto the bridge. The death guard assault tore the blood claws a new one and managed to break them in assault where they fled straight into typhus and were cut down. The original flag carriers charged the remnants of the second blood claw unit, ensuring they would be tied up so typhus could qb the flag. The only impediment to typhus getting the flag home was the valkyries and a pesky battery of basilisk that had escaped notice until now.
Imperial turn 4
The Valkyries moved and opened fire on the Titan, stripping the void shields and destroying one of the turbo lasers as the basilisks tore into typhus, killing three of his bodyguards. He few surviving imperial tanks tore heavy bolter shots into typhus and crew dropping his last bodyguard. A last ditch effort but a harsh one nonetheless.
Te rest of the game was decided in my last turn, where the Titan tore apart the basilisks and the Valkyries fell to the massed fire of havocs, quad guns, storm eagle, helbrute and some vector strikes from the heldrake. Since no units remained on the imperial side, it was declared a victory for the chaos forces and typhus symbolically ran the flag home, his armor spattered with the gore of his death shroud.
All in all one hell of a fun game!
