Hello everyone, my name's Erik and I moved to Kingston a few months ago. I'm looking around for opportunities to start a new campaign. I used to DM regularly for my group, but haven't had a chance to do so in some month so the itch is beginning to surface again. Given that it's the holidays, any game happening would likely happen more towards the start of January.
I figured I'd post here and see if there's any interest in getting a game going. I'm also very open to running a one-shot or two (that can afterwards be used as the starting point of the campaign) before getting a campaign going to see if the group meshes well together.
As far as systems go, I'm most comfortable with D&D 3.5 and it's many d20 variants.
Here's a few campaign ideas that I've been itching to DM:
1) I've run a campaign before based on a fantasy version of Republican Rome. This tends to be a grittier low-magic game (in the sense that magical items aren't just thrown around) that focuses on political intrigue. I had a lot of fun DMing this before and would like to try it again with a new group. I'd run this using D&D 3.5 coupled with a slightly homebrewed magic system.
2) A non-canon Star Wars campaign. I've run Star Wars games a few times before and in my experience they work best for me and the group when I let players go wild with the story. By default I'd use Star Wars d20 to run this. I've never tried running SAGA edition but I'm open to it since it seems to fix a lot of the stuff that I end up house-ruling when playing the d20 version (ie Jedis and space combat).
3) A cyberpunk campaign, whether Shadowrun-y or not. I'd likely use d20 Modern for this given that it's what I'm most comfortable with and I've had limited success with the Shadowrun system.
I've already got a campaign document written for #1. I'd likely tweek it a bit before circulating it, but overall that one's ready to go. If people want to run a Star Wars or Cyberpunk campaign, I'd have a bit of work to do before getting ready. As far as one-shots are concerned, I'm ready to go whenever a group gets together.
Ideally, I'd be looking to get between 3-6 people, but I've often run as many as 9-10 simultaneously. If there's a bigger group and people drop in and out on different weeks, that's fine with me.
As far as DMing style goes, the first session (or couple of hours) of a campaign that I run tends to be railroad-y just so that I can set the group up in the campaign world. However, pretty quickly the group will have to make a choice that'll open up the world. At that point, I tend to rely on player actions and DM improvisation to build whatever it is that players will be doing next.
That's it for now. If anyone's interested or have any further questions, let me know!
