So, as part of my prep for the upcoming tournament, I've been re-reading important parts of the BRB, and learning or re-learning some interesting things surrounding cover and LOS rules.
Some things I've found:
1) Area terrain gives the target a cover save as long as it's intervening in the path of at least 1 model from the firing unit, ignoring the 25% coverage rule.
2) All other types of cover are only granted if the target has 25% coverage from at least 1 firing model.
3) Friendly AND Enemy models grant cover saves when intervening in the path of fire. (Yeah this is a DERP moment for me, for some reason I thought friendly models would be smart enough to duck. apparently not)
4) Monstrous Creatures with the Jet or Jump special rule automatically pass dangerous terrain checks due to the Move Through Cover USR.
5) Monstrous Creatures only need to have their base touch area terrain to be granted a cover save by it. But still need 25% coverage from all other types. (AKA You need something at least 2.5" to 3" tall to grant cover to large MCs like Riptides, Wraithknights and Trygon/Mawlocs, and something 1" tall to hide a normal MC like a Carnifex or Tervigon)
6) There's a pretty good chance if your vehicle is hull down that it might be out of LOS.
7) Reverse of number 6, Hull Down stacks with ALL other types of cover saves, Jink, Dive, Stealth and Shrouding.
8) Hull mounted weapons on Flyers only have 45 degrees of up-down pivot. Many flyers actually need to be 8-12 inches back from many ground targets to actually be able to hit them!

I've always played with #3 as you posted it there, though I have had opponents question me GIVING them the cover save. Can't really quote a reference though, it's honestly probably a leftover rule for me....

for #8 are flyers only allowed 45 degrees total, or can they swivel their weapons 45 degrees up or down, resulting in a full 90 degrees of motion? the rules seem to say they can swivel up vertically up to 45 degrees, so my interpretation is that you can move a weapon down 45 degrees.

Your correct, I've edited my post as I missed a key word in there. 45 degrees of swivel in any direction, which means if your target is only 1" tall, from the top of a flying stand you have to be at least 6-8 inches back from the target. More if the weapon if mounted higher on the hull (such as the top turret on a storm raven)

Good thing most of my flyers are angled downwards, eliminates that silly rule from mattering.

True, but most of the weapons other than my Vulture's nose mounted HB are near the back middle of the model essentially right over the flyer base stand. This means they're 2.5" from the edge of the base which is lotsa room. Considering my kneeling Elysians are just over an inch tall and they're the smallest unit I can think of in the game other than maybe Ripper/Scarabs/Grots and my laying prone Elysians (who come in at 0.6" tall).
I was pretty confident I had plenty of room so I went and looked using a protractor. The weapons would hit ground just infront of the nose of the Valkyire/Vendetta/Vulture. That's the closet to ground/table/floor they can aim at. Not including aiming up 1 inch for a model which would be inside the nose area a little.
