I came across MERCS once a few months back, and even though it had some nice models it suffered from two drawbacks.
1) I know no one else in the area who plays it;
and 2) I don't have time to play it anyway so why bother.
However, they have recently put up a Kickstarter that has being doing well and has just under a month left to go.
Essentially they are producing the minis in plastic and releasing them in individual games that are in a more board game feel than the table top game.
At $60 a piece you essentially get one of these games which includes 5 models from two factions (10 models total) which are essentially the same characters found in each faction's respective starter (to my knowledge anyway) and models representing security guards and what not.
The game is similar in style to Shadowrun to boil it down. Essentially each mega global corporation has a team of their own mercenaries who go in and kidnap citizen employees of other corps; or steal/sabotage their research; etc.
As mentioned earlier, each game is self-contained and costs $60 and they have two to start with. You can buy either of these games individually, or both for $120 (I know, no discount but at the $120 level you gain the benefits of stretch goals which are already providing more and expanded figures to the sets).
Alternatively, at the $200 mark you get both games, a copy of a MERCS novel, a copy of a MERCS standalone dice game, and a copy of the rules for MERCS: 2nd Edition allowing you to use the minis from the Kickstarter as the factions in the table top game (a real bargain really given how much they charge for the current metal starters).
The main reason I bring this up is that even if you have no one else to play the "board game" versions with, there is an add-on for $10 that provides you rules for single player games. So, you can essentially play with yourself. Boy, that came out the wrong way.
Long story short, here's the link:
I haven't bought into this one yet myself, but with a tax cheque coming I am finding it a bit hard to resist.
