So I've been doing a little squad building in an effort to wrap my head around the rules of Escalation in Xwing. With the FAQ standing rules that you can not take more than 4 of the same large ships or 8 of the same small ships. This kinda rules out the ultimate 14 Tie fighter swarm.
With the massive Swarm out I have been looking at a more elite list option but I'm having trouble with the builds because of the handicap that occurs if you want to take a ship that us worth more than 30 points. For example at 150 points I thought a double falcon list would be very fun. But Its nearly impossible to build without having a throw away game.
If your falcon is 56 pts, in the 60 point game you are close enough it can be a balanced game but in order to take another 52-58 point ship that means no additional ship add ins until the rd 120 pt game. Which puts you at a big disadvantage in your 2nd 90 pt game.
Has any one else had problems with the escalation format in list crafting?

I don't see the problem with not having to face 14 tie fighters... You would just need to start with your more moderately priced falcon first (ie: not 56 points) then when it jumps to 100 you can add the second... it's 60/ 100/ 120/ 150 right?

60/90/130/150 So you only get to add 30 points from game to game. I do really like the no more than 8 of the same small ships. I mean the falcon kinda worse case, but even with with some pricey models: Fire spray, Phantoms, Defenders, Bwing, Ewings can all fall into the 35+ points so they can be hard to add from match to match without handicapping yourself from game to game.

Which pilots were you looking at? Han and Chewbacca?
Yeah, I can see the issue you're having as you're looking at pilots that are 46, 44, and 42 and when going in increments of 30, you're really not going to fit them in as quick as you want.
What other ships were you thinking of mixing with them cause that might help sort things out.
You're right that you're going to have to short yourself here and there a bit but you might be able to swing it.
Remember, you can add upgrades to your ships as the rounds go on so they don't have to come out of the gate all tricked out.

yeah you'd almost have to start with bare bones Han only round one, then add bare bones Chewie round two... then start with upgrades and other ships after that.
yikes double falcon at 90 points... pretty rough!

See I'm not to sure that double bare bone falcons are that good at 90 pts. With the upgrades to the ships you are only running 6 attack dice! and without things like gunner or predator to stop really poor rolls I don't think you have the offense to really do anything to a 4-5 ship list. Yes you have a ton of hull points and you aren't going to get tabled at 90 pts but losing 1 falcon and its pretty much over.
It seems like escalation will very much be a mid-ranged cost fight. I'm starting to doubt that there will be too many ships over 35 pts. While filler ships like the TF's academy pilot and the headhunter bandit will be every where.
I think this is gonna lead to a lot of very close games and very few tabling which is really cool.

Have you thought of filling holes with Z-95 Headhunters?
A naked Chewie and a Bandit pilot cost 54 points - leaving you six points to add maybe one upgrade unless you feel you can handle things with just those two.
Next round add something else but cut yourself short a bit again and repeat for the third round and you should be able to afford a second Falcon come the 150 point round.
But, I am really starting to see what you're looking at here. More expensive pilots can really leave you short.
On the other hand, a Bounty Hunter runs just 33 points leaving 27 points for some TIE goodness...
Repeat that over the next few rounds and you're looking at 3 Firesprays and a mini TIE Swarm.

yeah, but I've had Han rip through three imperial ships all on his own... that much hull and shields can be a real bear to bring down, especially at under 100 points...
yeah it's 6 dice, but it's 8 at close range and 360 arc on the turret.... it's also as much hull/shield as 8.6 tie fighters... that's alot to get through
I think it could definitely work, and after round two becomes extremely dangerous with all the support.
