He’s got some good ideas to be certain, and that Barbed Heirodule is just dirty! Definitely a thought provoking article as I’m thinking about how I’d face it with my Nurgle and now the Sons.

Yeah that was an interesting article by bigpig - saw it on the Tyranid Hive forum.

I really liked that it gave an alternative tactic to "rush forward and hope you don't die on the way!"
and it appears that he was quite successful with it, getting third at a major GT which we know have some pretty harsh netlists dominating the top spots

<incredibly racist and over-used kung-fu master stereotypical voice> I see the young one has discovered spider-style. HAW-HAW. Patience young one, let the enemy show you his weakness, then strike! HAW-HAW. The mighty bug swarm has found it's true inner strength! </end incredibly racist and over-used kung-fu master stereotypical voice>
Ok, in seriousness, I'm not exactly current atm on the meta-shifts over the summer/fall, but I think this is a very strong list building mindset for Nids and other armies, With the mindset of go-get-em-alpha-strikes sounding more and more dominate, armies that can weather that storm and come back swinging are (probably) in short-supply. Trapdoor spider is a counter-meta build, and other armies that can build with a similar mindset, could completely swing this alpha-strike-fest back the other way. So many armies live and die by the roll to go first these days, finally I see a build that actually wants to go second in this meta.

Do venoms still grant cover to Models, or units now?
Also, why does he say malenthropes are a better alternative to venoms? Do malens also grant the cloud?

venomthropes grant to a unit within 6"
the reason Malanthropes are better is because for five points less than two venomthropes you get the same amount of wounds, but on a T5 creature, so is much harder to insta-kill... plus he has a few extra rules. Advantage to venomthropes is that you can normally get a bigger coverage because you have more models to spread out...
I really like my malanthrope and if I didn't have to order more at outrageous forgeworld prices, I'd probably own more!
