Yeah that is the rumor that I have read and that makes sense. All units have the option of skirmishing and can rank up to gain more combat bonuses. I think that sort of system could be very cool and fun to play with.

Remember that GW had that kind of system for the War of the Ring ruleset they tried to work in to Lord of the Rings (which was actually good, though the original LotR was so bad that no one played). They are probably sitting on a mountain of movement trays designed to stick round bases in to them and rank them up. www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/War-of-The-Ring-Cavalry-Movement-Trays

Yeah I remember that. I heard good things about War of the Ring but never got a chance to try it out (and nobody else I knew played it either).

I was still with GW when it got released, and played one small game with some people from HQ. It was really cool, much much better than the skirmish rules. Problem was that no-one had enough models to play it almost anywhere, and nobody was interested in paying hundreds of dollars to buy in to a new system that was connected to an absolutely terrible one.

I worked for GW when Return of the King came out.
I had an easier time selling dehydrated water in the desert than trying to get people to buy that stuff.
In my entire time there I only made one sale of a starter set to a kid with his mother.
Hopefully GW only borrows the better parts of those War of the Ring rules to bring over to Fantasy.
If they simplify it to the level of the LOTR skirmish game then the game is sunk.

I think if War of the Ring had been the initial ruleset for that game it would have done pretty well. There was a lot of excitement over it when the models first showed up, but the skirmish game was just so so bad.
