some earlier posting back and forth on this very thing on Faeit with a couple people weighing in: kingstonwarhammer.proboards.com/thread/4260/9th-edition?page=3Lizardmen wasn't mentioned... but doesn't mean they're just gone... there was alot of speculation contained in this... but the game is changing for certain - although apparently 8th edition armies are still legal, end times are legal, and the new 9th is all legal... apparently it's all cross-compatible... but we'll see when it all comes down. To be honest, 8th edition pretty much got me to the point where I haven't played WHFB for two months, as I truly and utterly hate this version of the game. I've gotten to the point lately where with these rumours and what has been released thus far for End Times that I'm not only considering coming back to the game.. but actually buying models. ...which is probably a good thing because if these rumours are true I actually won't have an army that can be played with 9th edition rules, and I dislike 8th

i couldn't figure out how clumped a faction could be but back in the day empire did have dwarves, ogres and halfling options.

I very much doubt Lizards are disappearing, seeing as they are a fairly popular army. Not sure where they fit in the "6 armies" rumor though. If they DO remove lizards (which I highly doubt), there will definitely be an uproar.
Essentially what is going on right now makes me NOT want to buy any models until 9th gets released, since I have no idea what will be compatible. Still intrigued to know what will come in 9th and trying to have an optimistic, open mind about it. So far the editions have been improvements on the previous one (6th < 7th < 8th in my opinion), so no reason to expect them to COMPLETELY botch 9th.

in the new fluff the world gets torn apart and all lizardmen are destroyed.
It would be easy for GW to get rid of them. As people have said they are popular. Which means stocks of those models are probably low and that means GW will not produce anymore models for that line. Once 9th drops GW simply removes them from the fluff as if they never existed. They did it with squats from 2nd 40k to 3rd 40k, and no one cared except squat players. I mean effectively Bretonnia is gone too.
Lots of changes are coming for good and for bad. I don't play anymore but I really want to see where it goes.
Oh and I will leave you with this. Everything I have read says that Fantasy is going to round bases. Have fun rebasing.

By that logic shouldn't space marines or eldar get scrapped because they are too popular and everyone has the models already?
Fluff not-withstanding, for a model company (as they have recently affirmed themselves to be) to completely discontinue an army for "fluff" reason is a stretch IMO. I was talking with Scott and he suggested that Lizards might go the way of a battlescroll list or something. Time to wait and see.

they'll be a supplement, or the rumours of them being scrapped are false... they're not going to discontinue an entire line of products which the have all the molds for, including a bunch of new plastic kits recently released.
Lizards will still be a playable army within the game.

The rumours did state that all current books would still be usable.
Essentially the game is broken into three "time frames".
1) Original Warhammer Fantasy (8th Edition)
2) End Times (the recently released books)
3) 9th Edition - at least a century or two after the events of the End Times.
The rumours state that you can technically use all books as they are, though to use an 8th edition book will put you at a disadvantage to playing against a 9th edition book. Essentially in what the world becomes (bubbles of civilization floating around bumping into each other...) there is still the chance that one of those bubbles wasn't affected by the End Times as much as others and therefore is essentially in its pre-End Times condition.
So you can keep your current models, they just might be the best army out there.
And as previously stated, rumours are pushing that the game is going to round bases.

Round base? So it becoming another skirmished based system?

The big rumours suggest round bases with skirmish formations by default with significant bonuses for ranking up.
