WHAT IS IT?
Fantasy skirmish game revolving around wizards and their henchmen body guards (up to eleven models per side)
Features one-roll opposed combat for hitting and damage using a d20
Focused on campaigns, wizard advancement and warband advancement.
Price of the book is $22 on Amazon, msrp is $28 cad.
What makes it different? Unit activation and wandering monsters. Scroll to the bottom for jot-note highlights.
Unit activation, for the turn a d20 initiative roll decides activation order in each phase.
The phases are wizard, apprentice, soldiers, creatures.
In the wizard phase players activate their wizard and up to three soldiers within 3" of the wizard. Models move then resolve their second action.
The apprentice phase has players activate their apprentice and up to three soldiers within 3" of their wizard.
Soldier phase players activate their soldiers. (Soldiers is a catch all term for hirelings)
Creature phase the wandering monsters move as per a simple script.
This creates a very fast back-forth activation system with little down time.
Wandering monsters are basically scenario dependent where people like Shannon or me can have loads of fun setting up tables or spawn events. The book also has a good table if you don't want to make your own table up.
Book also has some fantastic scenarios, running, jumping, climbing rules, treasure looting rules and some basic base upgrading rules.
Imo this is the best skirmish game for campaigning, I haven't got enough plays in to decide if I like it better than Song of Blades and Heroes but I'll keep you guys updated.
Jot-Notes
Tactical back forth activation
Works without wizards if both players ignore the spell section
Small figure count
Excellent terrain rules for moving without being overly complicated
Wandering monsters for an adversarial dnd feeling
Cheap book
Great campaign rules
Great warband advancement
Soldiers are archetypes which common fantasy figures readily represent (play with the toys you already own)
Stat blocks are condensed and simple
Good assortment of treasure
Fun
