Another "in progress" project that will have to wait, as there's no way I'm bringing the R'Varna to the champs. Way too underwhelming for way too many points. Very cool model though. Takes the riptide and makes it a blunt battering ram with two huge arm cannons. I think he'll be the first thing I finish after the Champs. A mostly finished commander. Arms magnetized. I'll be polishing him and a couple others off in February to get them fighting fit.

Out of curiosity what kind of timeframe would you say you take start-to-finish on something Crisis Suit sized? Now that I'm actually painting again (ie: mid-January every year), I'm trying to up my speed without losing quality, and it feels a losing battle.
I'm certainly happy with my end result, but 10+ working hours per marine is just bonkers over the top, and I know my end result isn't competition level or anything.

For a Commander, which is a bit bigger than Crisis sized, I'd say about 15 hours?
I think there comes a point where you say "How much time am I willing to put into this?" It's easy to fall into the trap of looking at AMAZING painters online and saying "If I work long enough, I could maybe do that" The issue there is they often only paint a single figure to that level at a time, or maybe a squad. The ones that pump out large amounts of high quality painting are usually paid to do so.
You have to come up with some sort of compromise. You also have to recognize that if you're painting to primarily play, not display, most people won't see all the imperfections you do. The most important thing is a unified scheme, and making sure all your army is painted. You could have the most amazing looking army with a crazy cool centerpiece, but if just one unit is painted in a jarringly different style, or not at all, it will drag the rest of the army way down. A lot of those "new hotness" armies that you see in tournaments suffer greatly from this, like when you would see five stormravens in five different schemes flying around.
The other thing you could focus on is getting the marines to a tabletop standard, and then revisiting them later. Do the main armour colour, the shading, a highlight or two, your spot colours, simple eye lenses, transfers and the base. When you've got some time between other models, you can go back and do the little details on the backpack, the battle damage, the radar on the auspex, all the little touches that people only notice when they actually pick the model up.

You're only limiting your potential if you don't take advantage of all the tools available Touche' good sir. But seriously, you should at least consider trying one out. I'm using it for the base colour including highlights and shadows. The rest is brush. It just speeds up the whole process and helps cruise through the tedious basecoat and shading process, so I can focus on the more rewarding detail brush work. Mike has been in contact with CK studios to present one of their classes next year. You really should consider it. A busy guy like yourself should jump at the chance to get more painting done!

Ugh, I'd love to but I'm struggling to find time for ANY painting right now; much less classes. I will look into it though as I imagine it'd speed parts along.

Thanks

Right, I have a hobby thread haha. Well, here's 10th edition! These terminators are an amazing update to a classic unit. I am looking forward to the multipart kit, whenever it comes out.
