So first I will apologies for the Lack of photo’s but the game was high stakes and I neglected my job as photographer.
*** BIG NOTE -SHANNON AND I BOTH MISSED THAT SET UP FOR THIS SCENARIO IS 6" DEPLOYMENT ZONES!!! YOU START 36" AWAY FROM EACH OTHER! REMEMBER THIS IT HAS A BIG IMPACT ON THE GAME****
(Shannon - I'll Add my comments in Italics)
Set Up
As pre the scenario we set up with the “Hill” in the middle of the table and then added in a balanced terrain. I think we had 6 pieces of terrain most of which were quite call and LOS blocking.
Shannon’s Warlord – Eternal warrior, grants warlord Eternal warrior (codex trait)
Jordan’s Warlord – Strategic Genius, +1 to seize and re-roll reserves when warlord is alive (Rulebook)
Table side roll – Shannon won
First Turn – Jordan won (dammit)
Storm front effect was rolled it started on short table edge that was closer to the back wall at nexus. Notes for this you need to really remember to roll the storm front distance EVERY player turn we almost missed this like 3 times.
(in my defense I was too busy dying to remember the storm front)
Set up
Model set up. All of Shannon’s models started on the Board. All my kroot started in reserves but NOT outflacking. Pretty standard Tau vs Cron set up. Wraiths formed front wall to give cover and start right at 12” mark. Foot troops all started on edge of table. Destroyer’s found spots behide Wraiths or cover.
Tau set up boardsides to the middle of the table with Terta support. The riptide wing all set up within 6” for bonus on my left board flank and the storm surge sat right on the 12” mark to push forward.
(standard face off vs. tau - goal is to survive the shooting crossing the board then get in and tie up buffmander's crazy unit to either kill it or at least stop it from shooting me off the board. At this point in the game however, I totally forget buffmander has hit and run)
Turn 1
**MOVE STORM
Jordan – All riptides nova charged with success for 3++ and used the formation ability to fire twice. Storm surge move up the table about 6-8” to put pressure on crons. First turn of shooting from the army dropped 5 of 6 wraiths in closest unit, put a wound on a destroyer and killed 2 warriors from a big scatter from the storm surge. 2 of the Riptide blasts scattered fully due to the storm that started on the left table side.
**MOVE STORM
Shannon – Wraiths pulled forward to tie up the Storm surge. Destroyer’s moved out to get shooting range and foot troops and tomb blades moved up towards hill. The whole Destroyer cult fired at the Storm surge and put 5 of 8 wounds on it after a 4++/5+. Single wraith charged in and eat some over watch, unit of 6 wraiths failed a 8-9” charge with their re-roll. Single wraith failed to do damage and then was stomped out on a 6 with a single stomp.
(What can I say, I was scared of the stormsurge so I devoted FAR too much shooting at it, and still didn't stop the thing, plus I'm pretty convinced those wraiths failed that charge on purpose just to spite me)
Turn 2
***MOVE STORM
Jordan – Riptides went for nova Charge and 2 of 4 failed on 3+ re-roll and took a single wound. Storm surge moved forward again. Tau shooting phase pulled down 3.5 wraiths and put a wound on a spyder and maybe a wound on a single destroyer. Again the storm causing a pull scatter hurt a little as the storm surge missed and 1 riptide missed totally as well. All kroot showed up moved forward.
**MOVE STORM
Shannon – Wraith’s moved into charge position against the Broadside’s and a terta. Destroyer Cult pulled down the Storm surge and the heavy Destroyers shot at the 2x riptide unit but the 3+ on the front riptide held to no wounds. Tomb blades flatten a unit of 10 kroot. The foot Cron moved up closer to the hill. The last 3 wraiths made a combo charge on a terta and the broadsides. The wraiths did a very poor no wounds on terta and only killed 2 drones in the broadside unit. Leadership held and the Broadsides Hit and Ran Away from the always scary wraiths.
(it's at this moment that I realize buffmander has hit and run. Like the moment Jordan tells me it. stupid buffmander! and wraiths what the hell? you can't outfight tau or pull down a 2HP open topped AV10 vehicle??? now I KNOW it's spite!)
Turn 3
**MOVE STORM
Jordan – Riptide keep pushing up the flank in the storm and the kroot pushed into the hill. The shooting phase for the Tau again put some wound on destroyers. The two units of kroot were able to engage the scarab swarms and kill both down to a single swarm. Overall now a huge turn in term of models being lost.
** MOVE STORM
Shannon – Warriors moved up to almost the Hill. Two units of Destroyers went for the hill and the 3rd unit went to engage the double riptide unit. The Destroyers shot up the broadside unit killing all drones and doing a wound on buffmander and a broadside. The Tomb blades killed off the only non-engaged unit of kroot. The destroyers fired on the Riptides and then made the charge to tie them up. The scarabs were wiped out in close combat. 1 Terta was also killed but warrior shooting? In the assault jump phase the destroyers moved to block one whole side of the Hill.
(okay I wouldn't call the destroyers charging a unit of two riptides a very good tactic. In fact it was downright stupid in alot of ways, but figured he's hitting me on 4's, wounding me on 3's and I've got a 4+ reanimation and he doesn't have many attacks so why not. Plus then he's not dropping AP2 templates on me. Those sting alot. Besides, necrons have L10 so even if I take a wound or two I'm NOT going anywhere am I? So yeah, I rolled the dice in thinking his shooting is better than mine, so if I've got to give mine up so be it. So I guess it was a tactic now that I think of it. I might be a genius)
Turn 4
**Move STORM
Jordan – This is the beginning of the slap fight. The objective to get units on the hill was starting to hit crunch time. The broadsides shot a unit of destroyers then charged, a unit of kroot went into help. A single Riptide charge the other unit of destroyers. The double Riptide unit was able to put a single wound on the destroyers have make them run. The 2nd unit of kroot tried for an 8” charge vs a unit of warriors on the Hills base but they were gunned down to 2 models in over watch. The last riptide was blocked from going to the hill due to smart placement from Shannon’s warriors.
**MOVE STORM
Shannon – Shannon cleaned up the Kroot and tried to pop the last Terta’s with the warriors and Tomb blades. The rest of the turn was a bunch of combats that did nothing.
(goddam it destroyers. How do you exactly fail that leadership after losing by ONE wound? Now he's free with a couple of riptides! Okay maybe I'm not such a genius after all.)
Turn 5
Jordan – At this point like 90% of the table was storm. The double unit of riptides move toward the hill with the big assault jump. A lone riptide charged the immortals and Overlord unit and pulled it off the hill with its consolidation move. The double riptide unit moved to set up a charge if the game continued because Shannon again blocked my placement with troops. Combat happened again and it was another slap fight of nothing happening.
**MOVE STORM
Shannon – Unit of Destroyer’s fired at the unengaged riptides to no effect. The tomb blade and Warriors spent their turn trying to kill the 2 tertas but only managed a single glance. All the combats went back into their epic slap fights and maybe a single wound was caused.
(alright, so apparently I can't outfight tau, and 15 hits can't roll two sixes to wound. Screw you probability. We're totally breaking up and seeing other people now! maybe if I bubble wrap the entire objective and just try to turtle and not die I could pull this out. My troops might as well get in the way at least, it's not like their guns were loaded today with gauss anyways. Is huddling in the fetal position a tactic? that's kind of all I've got at this point!)
Turn 6 – Storm had crossed the board so no more rolls
Jordan- double riptides charged the unit of warriors to pull them off the objective but they were able to keep 2 models on and make contact on the charge. The kroot broke from the combat with the destroyers and ran but the broadsides held.
Shannon – The Terta’s proved to be killable as they finally went down. The Slap fight continued and things looked bad for the Tau as the Necrons had 6 vs my 5.
(oh look, you idiots finally punched a tetra to death. *cue slow clap* only took you two turns)
Turn 7- That’s right the dice wanted this to be a real nail bitter.
Jordan- Rolled to see if we could break some of the units from the hill but the only successful fight caused 4 wounds but all were saved.
Shannon – Took the game as his Necrons were able to keep the slap fight alive and didn’t break from the objective.
That was game.
(yay, turtle power!)
So final tally was 11-3 for Shannon. He took Primary for 10 and had an HQ touching the Hill +1. I had 4 for HQ touching but -1 since I didn’t take out any full troop choices units.
Despite the blow out score it was a nail bitter for the last 3 turn. It was looking really good for the Tau but the Necron’s knew how to hold the objectives well.
After Thoughts
-Get to the hill early and stay there. Shannon did a good job baiting me to the left flank and then out positioned me on the objective (yeah I totally meant to do that... actually and stuff!)
-The Storm isn’t too bad. Don’t fear it. The Stealth is a nice bonus. A few templates scattered off full but was still worth it. (actually saved my bacon on a crucial early turn having some of those templates scatter full distance)
-Remember that the Objective is UNIT on the hill not troops. If you have a ton of units this is a good time to use them smart. Losing a unit really sucks in this one.
-tactically I think I did pretty well but I did stay away from the Hill for too long. Should have moved over on turn 3 rather than turn 4.
-Shannon had the worst offensive dice I’ve seen in a while. His defense held up but on multiple turns the destroyers were rolling 2’s or 1’s then 2’s or 10 rapid fire warriors not rolling a single 6 to glace a terta at like 3 inches. I definitely got lucky with the number of saves I had to make (sigh... why you dice hate me so much?)
