Just curious whether the various Spearhead formations will be allowed in local tournament play at some point in the future?

At this point, no. If interest starts arising I can consider doing a Spearhead event, but at the moment it would exclude too many people from playing, and require too many points to do effectively in my opinion.
I'd be all for trying it out some time at the store or my place though....6 Wraithlord monster spearhead....hurrah.

interesting idea from what I've read... just requires alot of models to pull off.... a little pricey... but would be kind of cool for a couple games.... I'm wondering if you have to use higher point value games to really pull it off well though....

Seems like that to me. Most of the Spearhead formations involve 3+ tanks or monstrous creatures, and you have to build an army on top of that. I'd say 2500 pts would be a reasonable amount to keep the game playable in reasonable time, but still have plenty of room in your army list.
Remember that as most lists will be VERY mechanized and feature far fewer troops, they'll likely play fast for the points level.
