From what I read it was mainly just that chapterhouse just used stuff like "works with space marines tm" and showed their bitz being used with a GW kit

Which is enough to make GW want to rally and defend their intellectual property rights. There is also the use of names that GW uses for marine chapters and what not. And don't forget the shoulder pads and Rhino doors which are not too much different from what GW has produced themselves.
If you visit the CHS website today you'll notice that a lot of the references to Space Marines and Tyranids are gone and in their place is references to Space Elves, Space Infantry, and Space Bugs and Space Monsters. These are things that if they had to foresight to do in the beginning, might not have lead to them getting sued.

....and to be fair, they were specifically violating GW's copyright up until this change... so as much as GW can be portrayed as an evil empire at times... they do have a point... they actually were posting GW copyrighted material and advertising their product as after-market parts for the GW range....

Indeed. I wish I had have ordered my Jump Packs and shoulder pads in from them before this!
