From my initial cursory look at the OK army book and lists on forums, it seems that it is very useful (maybe necessary) to have both a Slaughtermaster and a Butcher in a list. Also, I have not seen a number of units in any lists including a Hunter or Yhetees. Are these units just not that useful or their roles are better filled with other units?
Looks like Bulls and Ironguts get used alot. Plus leadbelchers, slave giants and scraplaunchers.

Well, this is just my two cents... however I've been able to run a few successful ogre lists by sticking to a few standard guidelines: 1. Staughtermasters need to be in every 8th ed list. Now that you add your level to dispelling, and we can get a slaughtermaster in under 3,000 points (because of the tyrant requirement, under 7th ed, there was no way to field one in regular games). If you can bring a butcher too, it helps alot. The main reason is because you can then have two attempts at every gutmagic spell, and can use much fewer dice (due to the low casting values) to really spam spells. They'll be able to get rid of many of them... but not ALL! 2. Hunters - cool concept... nice model... really, really crappy hero choice.... if he could move and shoot he might be better... if he could hunt monsters (his rules kind of imply it - but I wouldn't suggest it) then maybe... a leadership bonus to trappers? useful how often? Anyways, cool concept, but poorly executed... I've tried a number of times - each time I'd wished I'd spent those precious points better... 3. Yhetees... ugly model... ugly rules.... I'm just not sure a defenseless ogre that gives -1 to hit is really worth it... they have magic weapons? ummmm.... okay.... guess that will help versus all those banshee heavy VC armies you see these days.... move through terrain without a movement penalty? yep, so can everyone else in 8th ed. and they cost HOW MUCH? you're better off with bulls unfortunately... and you can get twice as many... and you can can't cast gutmagic on yhetees... the list goes on and on why these are overcosted and generally not found in any lists... (too bad, because the Wargods miniatures make some incredibly sweet yhetees that I wold buy in a heartbeat if the unit was anywhere close to being worth taking) 3. slavegiants are cool... but I sure wish they were stubborn like regular giants... and throttle with chain isn't that good either... but I still really like the model so will field one from time to time. 4. scraplaunchers are pretty awesome... large template killing blow stone thrower? wow... too bad for everyone you take you need one unit of bulls and one unit of gnoblars.... 5. leadbelchers - kind of hit or miss... when they work they're kind of awesome... but even when they're getting alot of shots, by the time they have to roll to hit/wound and get past saves, they're not usually dropping alot for their cost - except themselves... whenever mine misfire they always manage to wound themselves with every shot! my favourite unit is ironguts... (a holdover from 7th in some ways as they ASL now even when charging) Just really like having an effective core unit that hits that hard.... If you're playing ogres though, it's best to play the units you like... it's rather difficult to play them competitively, regardless of the persistent legends of the mighty ogrestar....

Thanks for the info Shannon. I figured the Hunter and Yhetees were not worth it. I realize OK are not that competitive right now but still think they are interesting. I like a lot of the models.
I am starting to formulate some ideas for a list with a tyrant, slaughtermaster, butcher, bruiser BSB, a unit of ironguts, a couple units of bulls, a unit of gnoblars, a scraplauncher and a slave giant as a starting point and expanding from there. I guess the OK battalion box would be a good place to start when I'm ready.

The batallion box is the best deal in warhammer.... you have the makings of pretty much an entire army out of two of them..... no bad choices in the box... and because most are built out of the same torso, if you're not wanting belchers, you can just make bulls or ironguts out of them... also you can easily make characters and BSB's out of the basic troops easily enough.... and a bull is one greenstuff apron away from being a butcher.... the ogres are super easy to convert.... also don't buy the scraplauncher... just convert it... you'll pull your hair out trying to assemble that model... commonly known as the WORST warhammer model to assemble.... the giant kit is awesome by the way.... SO many useful bits and different ways of converting him up..... - and as much as people knock the ogres... I've won far more games than lost with them...
