if i give a dreadlord the black dragon egg witch is one use only and gives him toughtness 6 and breath weapon. would you think it would be better to use the breath weapon in close combate or move close up and try to get has many as i can. also can i use it after a challenge?

Hard to say. Having T6 in combat is great and the extra 2d6 attacks could prove deciding, but at the same time you're likely to get more hits if you use it as a template attack
I think Tommy's run it a few times so he'd likely be able to give you a better idea of how well it works

whenever possible, use it in combat... it adds to combat res, so can decidedly swing the battle in your favor (as long as you wound!) and give you the chance to run down the enemy unit, thereby giving you the points for the WHOLE unit, rather than a couple casualties....

To my knowledge you have to declare at the start of the turn you are using the egg and you have to declare you are using the breath weapon at the start of combat. So if you are in a challenge then the 2d6 hits go against the character you are in the challenge with since you cannot direct attacks against the unit if you are in a challange.
