I was listening to the Art of War last night and had an interesting idea.
Many Space Marine (and non-Marine) players may know of the tactic know as "Steel Rain". Since the Astaraes never have enough numbers to hold every place, they hold parts of their army in reserve in orbit. If enemies attack a certain objective or something, they will launch the Drop Pods and take them out.
So. Here's the idea.
Use Rhinos (maybe Razorbacks but those are expensive for this role) and some squads. The key is, it has to look formidable enough to have the enemy unleash his attacks (and hopefully any deep striking reserves) on that force. Its kind of a DISTRACTION CARNIFEX.
Now here's the clever part. The rest of your army shall have been invested in drop pods and fortifications, like Vengeance batteries w/ Battle Cannons. The enemy is now ready to be crushed. Be sure to hold back your drop pods as long as possible, like choosing a character who can alter/decrease reserve rolls. When the enemy goes to deal with the annoying fortifications (You can't just leave half a dozen Battle Cannons lying around to blast you to bits, can you?) half Drop Pods will drop in, trapping the advance chaps and after quickly raking them over with bolt pistols, charge into melee and tie them up. The battle cannons ought to have dealt them enough damage so there aren't many left. This tying up is to prevent the other forces of your opponent from blasting your dudes, in case the other drop pods don't make it on time. If they do, feel free to not go into melee and between the bolters and battle cannons, rip whatever you have trapped to shreds. The other drop pods will drop in and beat up the remaining forces.
I don't really know if this will work in an objectives game, but seems pretty sound. Comments?
