im not sure my votes count since i dont know if i have have a successful tau army, but my choises are:
Firewarriors : basic troops, the back bone of any army, fire warriors can lure in foes for a counter attack as well as their range and strength on their weapons are a great basic troop weapon, add the ability for marker lights to help other units and the devil fish to give them some more cover so they can sit on objectives, i think they are one of the best units tau have.
Broadsides: strength 10 ap1 twin linked with a 72 inch range, i think that speaks for it self, pretty much essential if you are coming agesnt any ememy armour imo.
That said i am bias so take it all with a grain of salt lol

Well I don't own a tau army, but I find the ones that tend to dish out the most hurt to me have suits featured prominently... (and also seems to be the competative builds online as well)
And Tommy's commander always gives me big problems, so I'll choose him as well....

yeah it was between the ones i picked and the crisis suits, i love them also they are amazing, jump jets, very versitile and able to take a wide range of weapons and options. which the commander can take all the same options and weapons plus some so him as well but ill stick with my choises altough i never leave any of those out of a list when i make one lol

My reasoning for selecting Piranha and Kroot are because I think they are the army's best skirmishers. With either the ability to move fast or affect deployment, they allow the truly dangerous elements of the Tau to function with less hindrance, either by denying the enemy physical access, slowing their progress, or attracting their attention. This means those Crisis and Broadside suits will survive long enough to perform their deadly efficient work.
For those reasons, the Piranha and Kroot are my MVPs.
In my limited experience and decidedly humble opinion, I think mastering the use of my skirmishers remains a prerequisite for attaining competent command of my Tau army.

I chose Broadsides and Devilfish. I like the devilfish because they seem to me to be what Tau are about, have some mobility to place your guns in the right spot to mow down your enemy while not letting them strike back at you. Broadsides are the opposite side 'but when something really needs to die, we can do that as well'.

I picked crisis suits and hammerheads. Crisis suits provide a variety of capability. Hammerheads also have not only the anti-tank but the pie plate. There are other usefeul options. I would almost always take Kroot, and Broadside battlesuits are great anti-tank especially in the mech meta-game of today. Piranhas are great anti-tank hunters - if I was playing Tau in 5th I would probably get a few more since I only have one in my force. There are some units that I like but are not so good, such as Vespid.

I chose Fire Warriors and Stealth Suits. Fire Warriors, in my opinion, are some of the strongest ranged basic infantry in the game. They should be a backbone to any Tau force and with their 30" guns they certainly get a few shots in before the opposition can offer some reprisal. With their above average strength they are a threat to infantry and light armour which is astounding. Their only draw backs are their average ballistic skill and their lack of carrying anything other than carbines or rifles. For the only race that is actually advancing in tech it's odd that they can't diversity their infantry with other weapon options or even drone based heavy weapons similar to Eldar weapon platforms. Stealth Suits I picked due to their threat capability. Though limited with their weapon's capability the options of fusion guns or burst cannons their defensive capabilities make them a pain in the butt if used properly. Perhaps its just because my main opponent in friendly games plays Tau or Dark Eldar and he uses these as his main harassers to my flanks and they typically survive due to their cloaking. If I try to take them out I'm usually picked apart by other units as they retreat but if I ignore them then my unit usually gets picked apart. Lose/Lose situation for me.

An excellent point. For a new codex, to illustrate this concept, I hope they allow squad leaders a wider access to drones. I think a burst cannon or sniper drone could easily serve as squad support without changing the light infantry nature of the unit. Giving the Fire Warrior squad an option to choose, say, one of three attachment choices would be another way to go as well.
It will definitely be interesting to see what differences exist between this and a future poll when a new codex is released.
( tangentially related, I also hope they give Kroot an option to take 18" assault 1 rifles )

Devilfish and Piranha. Devilfish to hide your troops in to capture objectives and Piranhas to drop seeker missiles on enemy side armour

Piranhas & Kroot, as they are the army's skirmishers. They allow the rest of the army to survive by blocking/delaying, and pretending they're dangerous themselves, thus drawing fire and dying... all which save the more valuable Tau units.

Kroot and Suits. Suits are all of your real damage output in a list obviously, and Kroot are the best outflanking troop choice in the game currently imo (due to having a unit of 20+ of them)

I chose suits & piranhas, with fire warriors a very close third. Suits are customizable, and thus you can gear them to do well in any role whether it's Anti-Tank, Anti-Infantry or Support.
I chose piranhas because they provide a lot of mobility, and without them tau would have an even tougher time in objective games.
