www.warhammer-community.com/2017/06/17/new-edition-now-available-read-the-rules-get-the-t-shirtgw-homepage-post-1/Some interesting stuff in there. First and foremost, re-rolls *do* happen BEFORE modifiers, so if you hit on 3+ and roll a 3 while shooting a unit with -1 to hit, you *do not* get a re-roll. Also, if you roll a 2 against such a unit with a supercharged plasma weapon, you *do* explode. Second big one is that when making consolidation/pile-in moves, you don't have to move as close as possible to the nearest enemy, so long as you end your move closer than you started. Along this line, if you're in B2, you can't possibly end your move closer to the enemy, so you cannot move. Not sure I necessarily like either of those rulings, but I'm glad to actually *have* rulings.

Official rulings are good. Not perfect but good.
No errata on possible typos tho.
Like tervigon crushing claws giving 3 to armour save rather then -3.
Or inquisitional accolyts having 3 wounds for 8 points models lol.
But maybe those will come later.

hmmmm
Q: If a model cannot shoot at the closest visible enemy unit for some reason (e.g. it is within 1" of one of your units) but the next closest visible enemy unit is a Character, can that model then target the character? A: No.
ummmm okay...
\Note that if a model is in base-to-base contact, it cannot possibly end a move closer to the enemy, and so cannot move when its unit piles in or consolidates.

Ya closest model. Not closest viable model. Kind of stupid but it's their game I guess.

The combat blocking you from shooting a character makes zero sense and kind of shocks me as something they put in the FAQ as well. The rest seems fine to me.

Well it doesn't mean you can't shoot at another target further than the character. I think the idea was to avoid people just tying up units in combat and then slaughtering characters with shooting. Also allows combat armies with non-combat characters to fight and still protect their character who may be providing buffs to that combat unit.

Yeah this was what I was pointing out to Justin in the rulebook yesterday, as it clearly does say it... .... seems pretty dumb (and thankfully wasn't a factor in my game with Chris yesterday - as there were other units providing broodlord blocking duties!) and I'm not entirely sure why this is the case... but they've got a TON more playtesting on this edition than me, so I'm just going to go with it for now (as a couple rules in AOS I originally thought were complete garbage ended up having some merit after I played them for six months)

Here's an excellent explanation of the modifiers after rolling I stole from reddit. Sequence of Events 1) Standard rolls. 2) Distinguish failed from passed. 3) Re-rolls 4) Apply Modifiers 5) Check Statements Scenario A Space Marine (BS3+) is firing at a XV95 Ghostkeel Battlesuit. The Space Marine is using a plasma gun. The Space Marine is benefiting from a re-roll all failed to hit rolls. The Space Marine uses the supercharge profile of his plasma gun. The Ghostkeel is more than 12" away from the Space Marine, thus the Space Marine has -1 to hit rolls. The Ghostkeel is also within 3" of a stealth drone, giving the Space Marine another -1 to hit rolls (Total of -2 to hit rolls) Scenario - Sequence of Events 1) Standard rolls: As the Space Marine pulls the trigger, for the sake of this example, lets say he has 6 shots and every possibility from the to hit roll is rolled (1,2,3,4,5,6). 2) Distinguish failed from passed: Being BS3+, the Space Marine theoretically misses (1,2). 3) Re-rolls: The (1,2) dice are re-rolled, the result being are (4,5). Having (3,4,4,5,5,6) as the new result. 4) Apply Modifiers: From (3,4,4,5,5,6) the modified result is (1,2,2,3,3,4) due to -2 to hit rolls. 5) Check Statements: The Space Marine managed to land 3 shots (3,3,4) however the (1) which was previously a (3) did not get re-rolled since he did pass the test, but after the modifiers turned into a lethal (1). Due to the supercharge rule, the model is slain. Ordering has slightly changed from the previous edition. Hope this helped you

that makes my brain hurt a bit... but it makes sense logically... and I'm sure after a few months (years) we'll all get used to it!

It makes sense. Glad it's been resolved so quickly.

The plasma example seems odd. If SM with a plasma gun fires at a tyranid warrior getting a to hit modifier from a venomthrope the plasma gun has, for some reason, a better chance of exploding then if just firing at a tyranid warrior with no to hit modifier to help it out. That kind of interaction will take a little getting used to. But that is how it seems to be so oh well - abstraction.

Yeah I agree it's kind of getting turned around weird in my head to picture it, but I think it's probably better for them to have a consistent method that is super clear rather than have one that is left to interpretation... probably because we have troubles all agreeing on any one interpretation as it is!!!

Could easily be fixed by GW by making gets hot "on a natural roll of a 1"

Ya mini wargamming also said they should have natural rolls and to hit rolls.
But they decided to not go that way.

Well they specifically state that "natural rolls" do exist
